Nolan
« on: Sunday 05 January 14 23:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am struggling with yet another vague part of my family tree :-(
My Grandfather was Thomas Nolan (1911-1990), people are a little unsure of where he was born but, it was definitely in Longford, maybe Ballinalee. It is his parents I am struggling with.
Nobody is quite sure where his Father also Thomas Nolan (1875-1943) came from but, it wasn't originally Longford, some guess the North others Carlow (aunts and uncles can't agree). He married a Rose Ann Reilly (1870-1955) who had another child Rose Ann Allen (1909-1970).
No-one knows where Rose Ann came from or where she got her surname only that she was not Thomas' daughter although although my grandfather and her always regarded each other as brother and sister.
I have found a few leads but, the more I find the more confused I get :-(
If you think you might have a clue I would love to hear it, thanks in advance Helen x

Should have made it more clear, I don't know where either Rose Ann came from :-)

Have you found them in 1911 census?

Not to my satisfaction that is them Aghadowey, possibilities but nothing concrete. My Grandfather was born at Christmas 1911 so wouldn't be on it and I can't find the other 3 together anywhere :-(

Well, I might have found them but they aren't together  :-\ Thought child Rose Ann Allen would be way to get them (even tried surname Nolan in case she was listed under Thomas' name), then started searching for Thomas and wife....

A Thomas Nolan (supposedly 35 and born Belfast but census details may not be accurate) with a Rose Ann Nolan born Co.Antrim listed as vagrants-

Possibly the child - Rosie Allen born Co.Cavan and in a school (Sisters of Mercy) in Roscommon-

Marriage location might help find them in other records but can't see anything yet.

Yes, that was one of my possibilities, just wasn't convinced enough to put in my tree.
Thomas was a soldier in The Irish Fuisiliers (sp), he had obviously left by then but would he not be down as a soldier rather than a vagrant?
Not that I object to a vagrant in the family ;-)
I had heard rumours that they were 'Tinkers' (rather unfortunate phrase) though so, maybe!

It's the best match I could find so far but you didn't mention he was in the Irish Fusiliers- will have a fuirther look other places.

Drat, i had a whole profile built up around the Carlow theory, looks like I will have to eat my words and tell the North theorists they were right  :-\
