Richard Blake - Lambeth - confused about children!!
« on: Sunday 12 January 14 13:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

After some research recently fell into place, I have gathered that

Richard Blake (born 1813, Lambeth) married Elizabeth Egan (born c.1815, Ireland) on 18/11/1838 at St Mark's, Kennington.

Elizabeth died Q Dec 1839 in Lambeth.

I have found baptism records for some children belonging to Richard and Elizabeth Blake:

Elizabeth (born 6th December 1839)
Charles William
Richard Thomas
Jane

all baptised on 19th January 1840.  There is no mention of mother being deceased, but the family were living at 9 Salutation Place, Lambeth.  On the 1841 census, Richard Blake is listed as living with the Egan family in Salutation Place, but there are no Blake children there.  (HO107/1060/2)

I'm somewhat confused!!  Can anyone help please?!

Burial at Lambeth St John
23 August 1840

Elizabeth Blake aged 1  Salutation Place

I can't see Richard or Charles there, however.  Have you found them in a later census?

Perhaps the children were cared for by maternal grandparents back in Ireland?

I was about to say the same as Lizdb - the chances are that as the children were so young they were taken in by family or friends and may be listed on the census under that family's name rather than their own. They may be some where as nurse children as well.

Thanks all.  I've had a little look around on the census records from time to time...still looking!  Richard was living with his 'in-laws' in 1841, so if the children were sent to Ireland, they would have gone to someone outside the direct family.  Typical, eh?!  However, I'm still living in hope that they remained in England...or that I can find out what happened to them.

Thank you Galium!  This is a new discovery for me.  I'd known that Richard was a widow when he married my 3xGt Grandmother, but it is only recently that I've discovered who his first wife was.  The children were only discovered today - I had assumed (tut, tut!) that they hadn't had children as there were none living with Richard in 1841.
