Edward Hemsley 1794 + /-
« on: Sunday 12 January 14 15:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

Please has anyone got access to the parish records for St Leodegarius Basford looking for any information on the Hemsley family .

I  have Edward Hemsley born around 1794 who I’m unable to track back to any parents. I know there was a marriage of a Richard Hemsley to Esther Wright in the church 12 Sep 1790 and wondered if by chance they could be his parents .

Edward  Hemsley married Elizabeth Mellours /Mellors on 6 May 1821 in St Marys Nottingham and as far as I can see had 9 children

Any help would be very much appreciated

Kind regards Judi

Update

It looks like Edward Hemsley married 3 times believe it or not all 3 seem to have been called ELIZABETH.

Edward Hemsley born 1794c Nottingham

First married Elizabeth Davison (marriage not found as yet)

they had 2 children
Walter Hemsley or Davison born 1817
christened 17 March 1817 St Peter Nottingham.......found on Family Search
then
Elizabeth Hemsley born 21 APR 1819 and then christened 2 feb 1823 along side her half sister Ann Hemsley.
-----------------

Elizabeth Hemsley nee Davison dies between 21 April 1819 and 6 May 1821.

Edward  Hemsley re marries to Elizabeth Mellours/ Mellor on 6 May 1821 Saint Mary, Nottingham, Nottingham, England

they have the following children
William Henry Hemsley 1821.
Eliza Hemsley 1823
Sarah Hemsley 1825 died 1834
Mary  Hemsley 1827

Elizabeth Hemsley nee Mellor then dies in 1830 Nottingham.

Edward Hemsley again marries this time to Elizabeth Moore nee Mangham

they have
Sarah Hemsley 1834
Emma Hemsley 1837
John Hemsley 1840 died 1843

Edward Hemsley died 1863.

Still looking for Edward Hemsley baptism and Parents born 1794c Nottinghamshire if anyone can shed any light on him

If Anyone can locate the first marriage that would be also appreciated

Kind regards Judi

The FHS CD has the second and third marriages that you mention, but nothing for Hemsley/Davison (indeed no other marriages for Ed% He%l% so I left the search terms pretty open!)

1821 05 06 at NOTTINGHAM St Mary:    Edward HEMSLEY and Elizabeth   MELLOURS

1832 09 26 at RADFORD St Peter:    Edward HEMSLEY and Elizabeth   MOORE

There are lots more baptisms at Basford for children of Richard and Esther but no Edwards. The first was Etty, in 1792; she was buried in 1793. The second, also Etty, was in 1794 and there's no record of a burial or marriage for that one - I wonder if the clerk wrote Etty instead of Edward?? It's always a possibility (though maybe clutching at straws). However, it seems that there were Hemsleys in Radford too before Edward married there - do you have anything that states he was born at Basford?

The baptisms in Notts between 1821-23 for Edward's children state that he was a sinkermaker; later baptisms show him as a bobbin and carriage maker.

By the way, Walter Hemsley Davison's baptism doesn't show a father's name, only his mothers (Elizabeth Davison) so it would seem that Elizabeth wasn't married. Are you sure that Edward was the father? Does Walter appear under either surname at any other point?
Ignore that, just found them on the censuses!

Elizabeth Hemsley b 1819 -- we don't actually know which Elizabeth was her mother - was it E Davison (and it doesn't look to me as though Eliz Davison and Edward ever married), or was it E Mellours? There is a burial at St Marys' for Elizabeth Davison aged 32, of Octagon Place, in 1828 -- this might be her (though of course it might not be!)

The FHS CD doesn't have any baptism for a daughter named Ann.

More questions than answers here - sorry!

Hi Annie

Really appreciate the time taken to re look at this ( Its just one of my many brick wall's ) but more annoying that its my 3x great Grandfather  :'(

I too thought that perhaps Etty could be Eddy( Edward ) but no real way to confirm either way sadly.

I have also rechecked the baptism for Elizabeth born 1819 christened 1823 ( The only reason I thought she may be the daughter of Elizabeth Davison was that Edward did not marry Elizabeth Mellours until 1821 ( 2 years after her birth ) but who knows like Walter she could have been born out of wedlock and then christened after his second  marriage in 1821.

The puzzle just gets bigger .

Many thanks for all the help

Kind Regards Judi.

Perhaps someone could have a look at the original PR if they're going to the archives, in case there's been a mistranscription with Etty/Edward.
