St Thomas, Exeter
« on: Tuesday 14 January 14 17:32 GMT (UK) »
I hope that this is in the right place and format.
I work at the Church of St Thomas the Apostle, in St Thomas, Exeter. Although the historic registers are not kept at the church, we do have good records of the monuments and memorials in the church and churchyard.
If it would be helpful to anyone for me to look up any names, send me a message.

Anne

Would you be willing to make this offer available to GenUKI? See http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Exeter/StThomas/index.html If so, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the webmaster.

Hello

We have quite a few WINDEATTs (unofficial one-name study) who lived at various times in St. Thomas parish.  I'd be very grateful for any additional information you may have.  This Dartmoor surname is, however, still fairly rare which should make looking it up relatively easy (although often plagued with mistranscriptions).  The more usual variants are with one T or a Y instead of an I).  Thank you in anticipation,

Sandra W

Any Pearce information (any spelling) would be welcome, and may knock down a few obstinate brick walls. Thank you for your kind offer.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for the kind offer.

I would be very greatful if you could look-up any Westlake or Staddon surname monuments at the Church.

Kindest Regards,

Pedro.

Hi all - sorry I've been away from the site for a week or so. I will be able to get to these requests tomorrow.

I will post anything that I find here, if that is OK with everyone. I am so new here, and don't want to upset the protocol, but posting results publicly seems to fit the 'feel' of the site. Please do let me know if I am wrong about this and I should send results as a private message - and how to do that!!

I have had a chance to check through the memorials list now. I hope that this is useful:

SandraW - I have checked for Windeatt, Windeat, Wyndeatt and Wyndeat and had no joy I'm afraid.

lesleyhannah - No Pearces, but one Pearse gravestone in the churchyard. The transcription is:
In Sacred Remembrance
of
JANE,
THE BELOVED WIFE OF
RICHARD PEARSE
BORN AUGUST 31st  1832,
DIED MARCH 15th  1897.
“Thou wilt show me the path of life
in thy presence is fullness of joy; at
thy right hand there are pleasures
for evermore    Psalm, XVI.III.
ALSO OF
MONTAGUE JAMES,
ELDEST SON OF THE ABOVE
BORN APRIL 15T~ 1858.
FIRST OFFICER OF THE S.S. TITANIA WHICH
FOUNDERED WITH ALL HANDS IN THE ATLANTIC
DURING THE MONTH Of FEBRUARY 1882.

“The Sea is His”    Psalm, (MCV.5)
ALSO OF THE ABOVE NAMED
R I C HARD PEARSE
BORN MARCH 20TH 1636.
DIED MARCH 7TH 1906.
in hope of a joyful resurrection.

and a photo of the stone is attached (if I've mastered the attaching thing)

pedroparker - no Westlakes, Staddons, Steddons or Stadons, I'm afraid

Thanks for that Anne. I wasn't sure whether your church would allow you to put the results on a public site, but I agree it's the best way to reach the highest number of people.
