Just a small question from me.... ::)

How have you traced your James back to the family of Peter and Jessie in Wigtownshire? Without a marriage for James makes it trickier to be 100% (although it looks very likely!)

James' marriage pre 1866/7 given the daughter Mary Jane who shows in 1871? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KD6G-Y4D

Another daughter Agnes born 1870 who died young?

Certainly both Jane and James didn't seem to follow an obvious naming pattern for their children's names. 1881 here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KD6G-Y4D (I know you have all of these, just helps to add on here).

Thats a perfectly valid question. Given my lask of information I am only working on the most likely parents for James McKie that lived in Preston, given the timeline, profession, probable origon etc.

Ill I know for definate is that James McKie is my wife's gg grandfather. I do not have a marriage record for James/Jane so I can not be 100% sure.

James and Jane's family names do see to have an odd naming convention apart from James and Jessie. Maybe the names came Jane's side or other branches of the McKie family?

McKie family in the 1881 Census:

Have you got James and Jane right up to 1911?

::) I would have my eye on this family, from 1861:

William Mckie 58 farmer b. Minnigaff, Kirkcudbright
Mary Mckie (Johnstone) 52 b. New Abbey, Kirkcudbright
Grace Mckie 25
William Mckie 22
James Mckie 20 joiner b. Urr, Kirkcudbright
Robert Mckie 14
Maryann Mckie 10
Jannet Johnstone 80 mother in law, b. Urr, Kirkcudbright

Address: Paradise Farm, Dumfries St Michael

This looks like the above James' christening https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYMF-4L4 His age fits better too. Your James shows consistently as born more like 1840/1 from his age in his census entries.

Your detective skills are more tuned in than mine!!!! The names, profession and dates seem to fit the picture all right. Ill have a look and see if I can make sense of it.

Noel, I believe (but havnt found the proof) that Peter was the son of George McKie and Margaret Milroy. Peter McKie's  death certificate  (recorded as Mackie) - 9th March 1897 at Penninghame records his father as George McKie, shoemaker, mothers name was not recorded.

Thanks for the reply folks. As you can see its most likely the family listed above in Kirkcudbright is the McKie family that I'm looking for. I might post this message in the Kirkcudbright board as it is more likely to be spotted by relevant people.

Thanks again,
Noel.
