Following an email exchange with the FreeBMD techs, I've been pointed at this:

For those that speak RegExp, this is an AWESOME facility - it not only allow one to pre-expand possible names (and perform multiple FreeBMD searches when wildcarding is deemed too expensive by the search), but also to explore the UK surname space more generally.

This page can be found (in theory!!) by going to to the FreeBMD homepage and following
search->Advanced Facilities->facility (bottom of the Advance Facilities page). Talk about hiding your light under a bushel.
