Barracks Farm Illingworth?
« on: Friday 17 January 14 15:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Does anyone know anything or where a "Barracks Farm" in/near Illingworth was/is? My Gt Gt Grandfather John Sutcliffe lived there until his death in 1901, states on 1901 census that it was No 2 Barracks farm.
Any info is much appreciated!
Thanks

If you would be good enough to let us know either the reference in 1901 for John, or his age, then we can look at the Enumerator's page, which will give a location for the area covered by the page he appears on.  As of this moment, I can't find him, because there are a number of gentlemen called John Sutcliffe within Halifax in the 1901 census  :'( :'(

From the picture Shirl found and a newspaper advert from 1952 it seems that sadly the farm was demolished. Although I notice the photo is dated 1957  ???

Yorkshire Post 12 Jan 1952 - the Town Clerk of Halifax advertised for sale by tender the grey stone roof slates of the recently demolished Barrack Farm, Illingworth.

Thanks, I've now found them!!!  RG13/4139/120 page 15

If you use Ancestry, then you can go back to page 1, which is the Enumerator's page, and this will give you the route.  By using Google Maps you can then trace, more of less, the modern day route.  I used Illingworth Road and Wrigley Hill to help me.

Thank you. Found it on some old maps dating from 1933 - 1948 but not on the 1956 one so must f been demolished in 1952. I even found another place i was looking for "Far Fold" which is not any up to date maps but is on the older maps, looks like where the N Halifax Grammar Sch is now!
Thanks so much for your help
