Hi, I'm new to Rootschat  and have host come across this forum.  I am also descended from the Dowle family of NewRomney and Lydd.

My great grandfather was Henry lepper Dowle and his father was John Dowle who married Elizabeth Barling Lepper.

I have traced the family back to John Dowle and Ann Shearwen, but I get quite confused here.  Somehow, seem to keep getting mixed up with the Dowle family of Dover.  Does anyone know if the two families are connected?

I would be very grateful if anyone has any more information about the Dowles.
Thank you
Tracey

Hi Tracey,

Unfortunately I don't think I can help you, so far. I don't have either of those people in my tree, however I have seen the names and I wouldn't be surprised if they are related to mine somewhere, especially give the places they came from!

I'll keep digging, you never know. In the meantime, good luck with your search!
Bennett (Aspley Guise & Luton, Beds); Elijah Bambridge (Burslem, Staff); Thomas Carr-Parkhurst boy (Loughrea, Gal'y); Dowle (Romney Marshes, Kent + London); Duffy (Trim, Meath); Joseph Kaye (Mirfield, W.Yks); Leonard (Meath); Mary Mulfahy/Fahy-famine orphan (Nenagh, Tipp'y); Elizabeth Hoskin (Illogan, Cornw); Wm Henry Pearce (Tucking Mill, Cornw, Burra, S.Aust); Ruddell (Kilmore, Armagh); Shepherd (Elstree, Herts); John/Clarissa Short (Bodmin, Cornw); Benjmn Thomas RN 1820s; Wright (Ballylisk).

My ancestor is also John Dowle.  My original researches came to the same conclusion that he was the grandson of John Dowle and Ann Shearwin  through their son Abraham Dowle and Ann Stevens.  There is an error in the Parish register for Lydd.  In fact John born 1806 was the son of another Abraham and Mary Beaney.  I proved this using the midwife's records and matching them with the parish registers.  I have researched this line back to James Dowle who died in 1686.

Hello David EB,
I'd appreciate your correct info about John Dowle of 1806 - 1864. Father of Mary Elizabeth Dowle (1832 - 1929). She is my GG GM. I had his father down as Thomas, and his father as Abraham Dowle/Dowell married to Mary Sherwood. Abraham's father as Abraham married to Susannah Grey.

also anything on the mother's side of course!

Many Thanks
Julian

I have two earlier children, John and William born 1829 and 1830.  Neither survived infancy.
I have Mary Elizabeth's baptism, but no further information on marriage etc.
Most of the other siblings I have details of spouses and children.

Have you researched John's wife Elizabeth Barling Lepper's line?  Her father, Henry Lepper, was quite an interesting character.

Hi David and Julian,
I've just found your postings (very late - I know!). I have some different information and I'm curious to know where I've gone wrong, because all this *seemed* to fit together. Some of this list agrees with David's and some doesn't.  ???

I have:
Peter Dowle b. 1806 = Charlotte Boots & then Eliza Evans
son of James Dowle b. 1777 = Mary Hunt
son of James Dowle b. 1741 = Anne Woodman
son of Abraham Dowle b. 1704 = Susanna (Susan) Grey
son of Abraham Dowle b. 1673 = Agnes Hall
son of James Dowle b. 1635 = Alice Mantell
son of James Dowle b. 1590 = Jane Bigges/Biggs
son of Abraham ?? Dowle

I have William Dowle b. 1675 = Elizabeth Marketman as uncle and aunt to Abraham b. 1704

Any information will be gratefully received!
For now,
OzJen
