Debbie,
Does the death certificate in 1864 for Sarah indicate at all the her husband contributed information to complete the form?

For instance there is provision in the columns for marriage and children details.
How complete and accurate are they ?

Cando, thank you.

I now have a copy of this death certificate and it could possibly be the William I am looking for.
He died in hospital, but doesn't say where. I assume Bendigo area or thereabouts as he was buried at Sandhurst
He is reported to be 55 years of age - a Shepherd - Born in  England
but all other is "Unknown".

When can you say that this is the person you are looking for? How much proof do you need?
Can I assume that this is my William? Or am I just grasping at straws???

Debbie

Not about Sarah, topic of thread but have you considered this possible death for her father

FRANCIS William
Parents Unknown
1866  52 years Born England Reg#6519

Sandhurst was the former name for Bendigo.

This Wm's burial record at Bendigo Cemetery

This newspaper item places a William FRANCIS in Bendigo in May 1863.

Cando

Thank you so much for all your hard work.  :) :)

Your lead on Sarah's death certificate was correct!!

I had been searching for quite a while - including using all sorts of spelling but always came up with nothing. I now have a copy and am very happy.

It states that Sarah was born in Donald - abt 1855. - I have searched again tonight and still can't find any record of her birth.

Thank you also for what you found on William FRANCIS .... sadly, I think this is the William that I was looking for. It seems to be more than a bit of a coincidence that young John died of burn related injuries and that this man William (mentioned in the article) was a witness to and questioned about the death of a woman that also died of a burn related incident, with her claiming she had been set alight. I had no idea when I started out on my search for Sarah's birth that I would end up here - but I guess not all our searches end on a happy note.

Also I would like to say a  huge thank you to all who have contributed and for all your help in my quest for information on the FRANCIS family.
Very much appreciated.

Debbie

Thanks for posting the transcriptions - they have been worth looking at.

The information on the death certificate for John is most strange.
When and where died... 5th Aug 1862 - Fernhurst Station on Loddon River
Name...John Francis - Infant
Cause of death...congestion of the brain & intestines from an extensive burn
Father...William Francis - Shepherd
Mother...Unknown
Informant...William Ford - Friend - Settler Fernhurst Station
Registered...7th Aug 1862 - B Ross - Wedderburn
Where born...Unknown
How long in the colonies...since birth

The informant says he is a friend and a 'settler' on Fenhurst station.  However he does not give the name of John's mother, nor does he know where John was born, although he states that John has been in the colonies since birth.  There is actually no age given for John although his age has been quoted (in the BMD index?) as 3 years.

How did he not know about Christina?  Had she left her husband and child? She was obviously at Fenhurst station with her husband in December 1863.   :-\

Sorry Judith,

It did say age 3 years, 3 months on the death certificate. I missed that.   :-[

Yes it is curious that the Settler didn't know Christina. Not sure why that is.... :-\

Hi stumble across you chat while doing family research on mazzoletti family. I live in Bendigo and Alice mazzoletti Hayes is my husbands great grandmother his grandmother being violet one of her 17 children!!. alice's parents were John mazoletti and Sarah France/ Francis?, sarah's mother was Christinia needs. I have stumble across similar info as you about Christina' tragic death at Fernhurst Station. I also found an article in old newspaper about a William Francis who was questioned over the death of a woman (Catherine Adaline Harrison) who claimed before she died that she was set alight by her husband with matches at the Union Hotel Lockwood Victoria, she was 31 and died in 1863. There is no record of a marriage between these two that I can find. The baby John that died from burns was listed as mother unknown, I need to find this article again as I stupidly only scribbled down details, but I feel they is a lot more to this story to be uncovered, your welcome to get in touch if I can help in any way, regards Andrea

If it helps anyone with their research I think the name is FERNIHURST Station.

Fernihurst is about 30k south of Boort and the Kinipanial Creek runs through it. Kinipanial Creek is a tributary of the Loddon River.

Here's the link for the snippets about Adaline Catherine HARRISON

Report of inquest
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/87936205

The 'will' which is mentioned in this report is not recorded at PROV.
Death registration: Victoria 1863 #5282
Catherine Adaline HARRISON   Parents: unknown

Seems to have been some uncertainty in newspaper reporting.
