Hunting for marriage in Aberystwyth -- FINISHED, WITH THANKS!
« on: Friday 24 January 14 17:43 GMT (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters :)

Ro(d)ger Jones Owen was b5th June 1788 in Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire.  The parish entry for his marriage to Ann Davies in Preston, Lancs. on 2nd April 1832 describes him as a widower, and I am eager to track down details of his first marriage.

A search of the Machynlleth parish register (and indeed other Powys parish registers) for this has yielded no results  :'(.  In the newspaper announcement of his 1832 marriage, however, Ro(d)ger describes himself as "late of Marine Terrace, Aberystwyth" (bit of self-engrandisement there?!) and so Aberyswyth seems the next logical place to hunt for this elusive marriage.  But I am unsure how to do this -- i.e. where/how parish records for Aberyswyth may be accessed.

Is any kind Rootschatter out there able to help/advise me? :)

Many thanks.

CELTIC ANNIE

Oops -- apologies for incorrect spellings of 'Aberystwyth' in my post -- hope I didn't offend anybody!  :-[ :-[

Hi

You should be able  to check on line with the national library of wales  which is in Aberystwyth.

Its a minefield registering for free and wandering the site but with determination you will get all the information  you want.

By the way Aberystwyth is in Ceredigion not Powys.
Good luck Sandra.

Many thanks for your kind assistance, Sandra.  Have had a quick peep at the National Library of Wales website -- and, as you suggest, it unfortunately does not seem to be the greatest site to navigate; but I shall see what I can wrangle out of it!

Regards.

You are welcome.  I do know a couple if people who navigate the site easily.  I got as far as registering but as I live only 30 miles away, I have promised myself a trip there.

Right now, I wish I lived that close, Sandra; but unfortunately, I reside thousands of miles away in sunny (well, apart from today -- ahem!)Texas :( :(.  Like you, I have now registered with the library; but I can't seem to work out how to access their parish records online. ??? However, I shall keep plugging away at it and contact them for help if I find myself really stuck.

Thanks again.

CELTIC ANNIE.

:o hope you break in soon!    I expect they have an email for a help section..

Let us know how you get on.

Marine terrace has recently been savaged by high seas and gales.  Have you googled it.  Its fun to see where ancestors actually lived.

Take care

Thought for today....Perhaps you could ask for advice on how to search thru this forum.  I am sure someone brighter than me could advise you.  I am somewhat technically challenged!
