John Carnegie Allan, 1849 - c1881
« on: Saturday 25 January 14 16:57 GMT (UK) »
Here I go again...John Carnegie Allan born Aberdeen and baptised in 1849...son of William Allan and Catharine Carnegie.  Married Helen Wemyss c 1878 in Bervie.  Daughter Susan Ann Allan born in 1880 in Bervie.  In 1881 Helen is listed as a widow in the census in Bervie.
John was a ships carpenter.  Does this mean he would have been aboard a ship or on land?

I have found one death for a John Allan on marine register from Scotland on board the Diana.  He was stabbed/murdered.

I am not sure if this is the one I am looking for.

Help......

Thanks
Lynda

British Newspapers ( Aberdeenshire ) I would suggest looking at the death for the John Allan on board the Diana and see what it says ..You can google Ships Carpenter and see what it says  :)

Hi. I can't help directly but want you to know that Helen Wemyss was my first cousin 3 times removed.
Good luck with the research.

Hi Cathy,
Thanks for the last message and welcome to Rootschat. For some reason I was not notified, so apologies for not getting back to you earlier.
The picture on my posts is of Helens daughter Susan, my gt grandmother.  I am still struggling to find the death of her father.

I have very little info on this part of the family but am happy to share what I have if needed.

Look forward to hearing from you .

Regards,
Lynda

Hi and thanks for responding. Unfortunately I have no information to help track the death. All I know from the 1881 census is that Susan Gill McRobb, Helen Allan and  Ann Barclay are all widows.
I am trying to get used to this new site and will gradually add information on who I am trying to trace.
Best wishes, Kathy

Have you seen this link -
http://www.geni.com/people/John-Allan/6000000003223718211
Not any more to go on, I'm afraid.

The Aberdeenshire library service have copies of many of the newspapers from that time and may be able to help. email - libraries@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

It is very likely that John was on a ship when he died, and may have been buried at sea. The register of shipping and seamen in Cardiff may be able to help - http://www.archiveswales.org.uk/anw/get_collection.php?inst_id=34&coll_id=11944&expand

Good luck.
