What if those aren't skirts...what if they're aprons. Big shopkeeper-style wraparound aprons with the sashes tied in front and dangling down.

Even if they are aprons, their skirts aren't any longer, so we have a 1920s length. The hairstyles fit better with a pre-war scenario, but short sleeves weren't seen until the 1920s. Ever.

In other words, I agree with Jim :)

Thank you Chinakay for your reply. Yes it's probably an apron and perhaps it's length and also the short sleeves were due to the nature of some the work they had to do on the farm. I'm trying to piece together my Granny's life and work 1903 onwards. She worked on various farms before marrying a farmer in 1913. By dating the photo I am hoping to identify where it was taken. Thank you again.

Anyone have any more thoughts on the dates of the three photos I posted previously? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

First one, possibly late war but more likely mid 1920s. Those striped things are definitely aprons, you can see it curling around the back on the middle gal. The short sleeves had nothing to do with any kind of work they were doing. They had short sleeves because it was the fashion. Clothing didn't alter beyond the current style for anything, including practicality. Mill and machinery workers got their sleeves and other clothing caught on a regular basis, got pulled in on a regular basis, and mangled on a regular basis.

Second, some Edwardian time frame, men are difficult to date precisely and this one is out of focus anyway.

Third, may be a reprint as Jim says.

Cheers,

I'm still trying to identify the two men in the two photos in my original post on this topic. What age do you think each one is in the photos? Is it possible it's the same person in the photos? From information posted previously the fist photo was possibly taken 1901-1910 and the second one possibly an Edwardian reprint of an 1880's photo. I've attached the photos again hoping for some suggestions. Thank you.

Not seen those 'pinnys' before but surely they are just to protect the dresses which are quite nice, whatever the work they are doing.

There is a resemblance between the two men but it seems to me the 2nd man's ears are set lower on his head.  If you compare the position of the ears to the eyes on both there's quite a difference.

Regorian - yes the pinnys were probably worn to protect their clothing. They worked on a farm so would've been involved in hard physical work.

HeatherLynne - yes I see what you mean by the position of the ears. Maybe the men are related hence the resemblance but I might never know!
