Stuck on a Smith....

What we know, William Smith born about 1867-69 in Farlam (according to census) to unknown parents. This our problem, where to look to find out more.
He married Margaret Ann Walton on 10 August 1892 in the parish church, Lambley.
William was listed as a coal miner on Marriage Cert.
Margaret we have info on and can go back, William is a mystery.
They had 10 Children (approx years of birth)
Maria 1892
Mary Annie 1895
Edith 1897
John Eddie 1898 (connection is down this line)
Redvers Walton 1900
Robert William 1902
Rowland 1905
Ernest 1907
Margaret Isobel 1909
Peter 1911

William and Margaret came out to Australia with some of the children in 1929. last know address in Northumberland was 16 Dale St, Haltwhistle.
Anyone who can help or give suggestions where to look for info on William it would be fantastic.

Hi, so I see on the 1871 census he is a grandson   as his name is smith I presume he was an illegitimate child of one of the older daughter that are shown on the 1861 census probabley jane smith age 17 or mary ann smith age 15 . I presume you have the census's do you?

ok, thanks, I was wondering if this might have been the case.
As on his marriage cert there was no father listed just a ----
I wonder if there was ever a case to the church under poor law?

Does his death record not state his mother was Mary Ann Smith and he was born Farlam Cumberland,

The 1861 census , shows his possible mother, Mary Ann still at home,
in Brampton,
RG9/3908
Gunning County Down,Kneale Isle of Man,Riddle Tynemouth,Bibby Kendal/Bradford,Colenso Penzance/Barrow-in-Furness,Steele Corney Fell,Chapman Ely,Dawes Alfreton,Blamire Westmoreland and Ulverston

He died in Melbourne, Australia in 1952 will chase up the death cert here.
Thanks all suggestions are great.
sometime you get a mental block  :)
it appears he might have been brought up by his grandparents.
I can find anything on Mary Ann after 1861 either.
but will keep searching

Thanks
