the 1871 British census shows the children all being born in St. John's Newfoundland.
The 1881 British census shows Laura's birth in Twillingate, Newfoundland.

Frank Fox Mortimer's birth can be found in St. John's from this site.

Cosmac
Many thanks.
I see that Twillingate is very remote and some 450 km from St John's were the rest of the siblings were born,

That is a very useful Newfoundland website where I have been able to find many of the other birth and baptism dates as well as some middle names.

Also a background history here. http://www.jmolds.k12.nf.ca/twillingate/history.html

Certainly no British Army ever stationed in Twillingate. Back in those days, Twillingate was a major fishing center. Merchants from England counties such as Devon, Dorset, and Hampshire operated there seasonally.

rmsturge,
Many thanks.
When the MORTIMER family returned to UK, the 1871 census has the father John as a Foreman in the Corn Trade.

Hi @markheal, I have a fairly complete tree of all the Mortimer siblings and the generations above and below, please PM to discuss further!

John Cawood was likely a foreman in the CorK trade, not Corn trade, in Bristol. (Later censuses had him as a "Cork Cutter").

Siblings were born in a mix of Twillingate and St Johns it seems. John Snr was a merchant out there.

John and Emma Mortimer (née Churchwood) moved to St John's Newfoundland in 1855.
- John was born 29 June 1823 in Exeter, Devon
- Emma was born 1831 in Shaldon, Devon
- They were married in 27 Feb 1855 in Bristol (and headed straight to Newfoundland)

The following children were then born in Newfoundland:
- Elizabeth Lash, born St John's 29 Nov 1855, baptised 31 Dec 1855
- Frank Fox, born St John's 17 Jun 1858, baptised 26 Aug 1858
- Sidney Rae, born St John's 16 Aug 1859, baptised 31 Dec 1859
- John Cawood, born St John's 22 Jan 1861, baptised 31 Dec 1861
- Maud Mary, born Twillingate 12 May 1862, baptised Twillingate 2 Feb 1865
- Harry Middleton Ford, born Twillingate 18 Sep 1864, baptised Twillingate 2 Feb 1865, died St John's (?) 8 Dec 1865
- Emma Churchwood, born St John's 31 Mar 1866, baptised May 1866
- Laura Gertrude Ayre, born Twillingate 2 Dec 1867, baptised Twillingate 14 May 1868.

What's particular strange is that Twillingate was a remote fishing port yet we have baptism records in _Feburary_ out there. Very few people except officials remained over winter there.

Two more children were born in Bristol upon their return in 1869/70 - Mary and Alfred. Mary is the only one I've not worked out what happened to.

Hello ajf101 and a very warm welcome to RootsChat  :)

You need to make 3 posts in order to use the PM system. 2 posts to just say "Hi" would do it.
