Carroll knocklong co limerick
« on: Monday 03 February 14 12:52 GMT (UK) »
John Carroll born 1851 (in or around knocklong) moved to Ennis, Co Clare married a German woman. He was a horse trainer. Any info would be great.

Thanks for that, are you sure her name was DeVault and not Dehwald?

How did you come by this information I've been trying for ages...

My husband would be a John Carrolls great grandson - our children his great great grandkids.

Would you have any info on John Carrolls parents or brothers and sisters, same goes for Augusta!

Spelling variations are not uncommon, especially when dealing with foreign names & accents.

By now, kc3, you should have gotten their marriage certificate which will list names and occupations of both fathers (unless illegitimate). Names of witness might also help as well as their residences at time of marriage.

From the other thread- She was  German and had to sign on at the Royal Constabulary Offices in Co Clare in Ireland during ww1. She was the only German that wasn't imprisoned. She was 19 when she married a John Carroll from limerick.
At the time of the marriage she would had acquired her husband's citizenship and been considered British not German so not sure why she would have had to register with the RIC.

Were the grave details I gave link to back in 2014 for 'August Carroll' hers? if so, she was slightly older than 19 when she married.

During ww1 all Germans (German from birth) were incarcerated in Ireland. So it didn't matter she was was married to an Irish man, they were all possible spies... Her DOB differs.

I have one DOB at 1861... One at 1865. Though I believe 1861 is the correct one, though can't find evidence of her birth in Germany, not even in Weisbaden.

Married 1884.

Children Charles (died at birth, no issue) , John, Frederick, Augusta (never married), William (died during WW1 - no issue), Helena (moved to London), James, Richard (my husband and children's direct ancestor)

I'm one of your husbands first cousins in America.

I'm afraid I have nothing new to share.

Possibly met you a long time ago when my eldest child was small...

Augusta is a hard link to trace, even with variations in her surname nothing pops up.

Can't find links to John Carroll in knock long either. Plenty of Carrolls, but nothing matches his birth. Even scrolling through parish records.

So, does the marriage certificate not give any of the details I asked about earlier?

And are the gravestone details for 'August Carroll' really Augusta?
