Hi Wini,
The”Disruption” which resulted in the establishment of the Free Church of Scotland occurred in 1843, and this included the parish of Durness. Baptisms and marriages performed by Free Church ministers do not appear in the OPR since the latter was a Church of Scotland record. Neither do they seem to be in the IGI. There is a separate register kept in Edinburgh (at New Register House, I think.) Some years ago, Angi Lamb made extracts from the Durness Free Church register, and sent me a list. On it there are the two marriages of John Gunn (Jr.), (despite the first one being prior to 1843) :
Gunn, John & Ross, Isabella; 23 March, 1835
Gunn, John & Gunn, Betsy: 1 November, 1851
I have misplaced the list of baptisms but will keep looking.
I skimmed through my copy of Hew Morrison’s transcription of the Durness OPR (1764 – 1814) and noticed a few “MacKaiscail” (or similar ) baptisms that might be of interest:
21 Dec, 1766: Alexander Mackaiscail in Crosple, Alexander
25 Jul, 1769: Alexander Mackaiscal in Crosple, Margaret
6 Aug, 1772: Alexander Mackaiscal in Crosple, Mary
The minister did not record the name of the mother during this period. I looked for a marriage of Alexander Mackaiscal without success. It may have taken place before the earliest recorded marriage which was in 1765.
There is a marriage of an Alexander Mackaiscal, in 1790, to Christian Campbell, and this might be the Alexander born 1766.
A search of the MIs in Durness parish was not fruitful. There were 3 John Gunns listed but none fit your circumstances. There were also 2 other Gunn families (one from Laid)
but the forenames did not match. There are no Mackaiscals listed. However, this not necessarily mean there are none buried in Durness.
Not much help, but it might lead to something.
Ian
