Thank you very much again.
Had just found the 1861 Census and filling it in on the Family History Program when your message came.

I thought the same that Eliza  Dickson was  the same as Eliza Richardson. However her place of birth has changed again. To Lancashire. I haven't as yet looked for her in 1871.

In the 1851 Census I think that the Nephew Henry Richardson aged 18 born in Westmorland  Morland is a son of Henry Richardson Snr c1793 Morland & his wife Elizabeth Wilkinson. I have Loads on this family.
However I do not have anything about Thomas Richardson Nephew aged 36 born Warcop Westmorland. Nor does anyone else who is researching this family.

It would seem that William Richardson b1797 is a brother of Henry Snr BUT I already have William Richardson bap 17 Sep 1796 Morland Died 17 Sep 1796 Morland. Father Thomas Richardson Mother Margaret (Peggy) Smith
I have this from the Morland PR's and I didn't see another William born in 1797. But the next child John was baptised 1799 so there could have been.

One more thing - on Family search there is a Baptism of Catherine Smith Richardson 30 June 1851. Father William & mother Eliza - Robert her brother is baptized the same day.
If this IS William Richardson whose parents are Thomas and Margaret nee Smith - then he could be carrying on the family name.

What I need now is some proof.

Thanks for your help.

Oh! Dear I have just seen a mistake  - I have headed this as William Richardson b1797 WARCOP :o :o It should be born in MORLAND.

Will have to change it. Think it is too late now.

Apologies to all who have read this.

I have found a marriage of Maria Eliza Richardson to George Barton in Wirrall Cheshire in 1857.

Through that I have found her on the 1861 Census.

I think her mother is with her but the spelling of the Surname is rather peculiar i.e. Eliza Ricbowson born Scarborough Yorks.
The age and area where she is born is more in keeping with Eliza Richardson.

Would be grateful if you could look and express your opinion.

An update.

I have found the death of William both in the Liverpool Mercury 1 July 1851 and Carlisle Journal 11 July 1851

The Rev William Richardson aged 54 at Claughton Birkenhead Cheshire. Of Consumption. On 27th June

So that confirms he was a Curate.

Chester Chronicle, Saturday, 12 Sep 1857, page 5
MARRIAGES
2nd inst., at St. Saviour's church, Oxton, Cheshire, by the Rev. W. Cocknoft, George, second son of the late Rev. George Burton, of Lincoln, to Maria Eliza, eldest daughter of the late Rev. William Richardson, of Hamilton-square, Birkenhead.

Chester Chronicle, Saturday 29 Nov 1851, page 5
MARRIAGES
18th inst., at Tarporley, by the Rev. John Prosser, M.A. curate, Mr. William Richardson, draper, to Elizabeth, widow of the late Mr. James Walton, draper, Tarporley.

Chester Chronicle, Saturday, 05 Jul 1851, page 3
DEATHS
27th ult, at Claughton, Birkenhead, aged 54, the Rev. Wm. Richardson.

Chester Chronicle, Friday, 09 Feb 1838, page 3
LOCAL
The late Rev. Wm. Richardson, for fifty-three years the revered Vicar of St. John's, Chester, has bequeathed the very munificent sum of 600 pounds, for the purpose of purchasing an ORGAN for that Church.

Perhaps this last-mentioned Rev. Richardson was your fella's father. Perhaps your fella was born in Cheshire. Perhaps not. Just a thought. I went through an online search for Wm Richardsons in Cheshire from 1838 through 1851, and this is all I could find.

My guess is that there may have been a previous wife, possibly married (and buried) in France. My daughter looked through the British-Subjects-born-in-France records that are available online, but neither Maria nor Laura appears. Many of the records from the pre-1860 period were destroyed in several fires. The fact that both girls were born in Paria makes it even worse, because the French government is putting a lot of the smaller town records online right now, but Paris isn't well represented.

The 1861 census has Maria being born c. 1834, which makes it more likely that Eliza is her mother. (Doesn't hurt, either, that Maria marriage announcement lists her middle name as Eliza.) The fact that they're both listed as Gentlewomen is interesting, too. Not just "independent means".

I have looked through the Somerset and Cheshire newspapers for 1860-1 and can't find George's death record (spelling it Barton or Burton).

Thank you so much for all the information. I am most grateful.

The marriage entry now gives me a better idea of where they lived. Do you think it was the Rev Richardson who lived at Hamilton Square of George Burton?

At one time I thought that he may have been married twice but looking at the name of their daughter Maria Eliza and the fact that Eliza is with her in the 1861 census makes me believe that he may have only been married once.

Also I believe that he was born in Morland Westmorland to Thomas Richardson & Margaret(Peggy) Smith.  There is a burial of a William of theirs in 11 Aug 1895 but there is also an entry in the baptisms of a William 18 Sep 1896 which says he was an 'infant' - that usually means a burial and correspondence with the Archives believe that to be so, and it was entered in the wrong place. However I am wondering if it was my chaps birth.

The fact Williams death was in the Carlisle Journal makes me believe he had connections up there too. That would have been the local paper for BMD's.

George Barton, Maria Eliza's husband, I have found a probate for him died 19th March 1861 in Torquay. I don't know if he was living in Torquay and she in Birkenhead! He left £4000. Haven't looked for a death in the papers for him.

Interesting about the Gentlewoman! If he came from the family I am thinking about then they weren't too badly off. They were farmers in Westmorland. He is not mentioned in his fathers will of 1829 (Maybe he had received his portion of the money in being educated)  but he is mentioned in his brother Septimus's will in 1838. That is why I believe him to be of this family.

But I still have to look further for that proof. I wonder where exactly he was a curate?

Thank you so much I really appreciate your effort.

I have found another child for this family on Family Search.

William Henry Richardson Bap 12 Jun 1846 Holy Trinity Birkenhead. Registered Q 1846. Died 1846 registered at Wirral. Buried Holy Trinity 12 Dec 1846.

If the Rev William R* c1797 is who I think then his oldest brother is called Henry.
Looking at the other names in his family- his grandmother (mothers side) was called Catherine Smith.
His mother was Margaret and sister was names Mary Bella.

I know it isn't proof but the family names are very similar to the ones in the family at Morland.

No Robert Laura or Marie.

Judy

PS I couldn't find any baptisms in France or Ireland of his Children but then I am not used to looking at either of those records.

Just to say this topic is continued on the Cheshire list as although he was born in Westmorland he lived in Cheshire.
