Completed with Thanks - Hannah Hawksworth and family - Cawthorne post 1841
« on: Thursday 13 February 14 04:19 GMT (UK) »
My gg grandfather, John Hawksworth (b. 1824/3/6) emigrated from Cawthorne (West Riding) to the USA circa 1845. I have good information about the family during the 1820s and 1830s, but they seem to have disappeared after John left the country. Any help in getting my research back on track would be appreciated.

John's parents were Lionel and Hannah Hawksworth. According to family records, Lionel died when John was "very young" and "the lodge helped his mother." John's siblings were Mary (b. 1826), Hariot (b. 1828), George (b. 1830), and Thomas (b. 1833).

I have found Hannah and Lionel's marriage (1823), Lionel's death (1837) and a record of a "Hannah Hawksworth (b. 1801)" who I believe to be John's mother in Cawthorne from the 1841 census. After that date, I can find no definite record of Hannah or any of John's siblings. I've checked the 1851 and 1861 censuses (to the best of my ability) but nothing turns up in Cawthorne. There is at least one other Hannah Hawksworth from Cawthorne (b. 1825-1830) but she is much younger. Interestingly, family records say that John wrote to his family (from the USA) many times, but never received a response.

I can imagine that, as a widow, Hannah may have remarried. However, I can find no record of that.

Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance.

Folks,

Thanks so much for your very quick response. I'm thrilled with the information you provided.

The (missing) marriage was key to my dilemma and, although I had seen it previously, I discounted it for a couple reasons. First, I assumed this was the Hannah b. 1825-1830 in Cawthorne. Second, according to my records, John left England AFTER this marriage, yet he made no mention of it in his otherwise detail recollection of his childhood.

However, I now see you are absolutely right. It was all right there and I didn't see it!

From the perspective of someone who is new to family research, this strikes a chord of melancholy. So sad that John never again heard from his family. Hard to imagine this type of disconnect in these days of GPS location and instant communication!

Again, thanks so much.

Just speculation here but . . . . .

Maybe John didn't get on with, or approve of, his step-father?
And therefore didn't mention him at all!!

The family obviously moved out of Cawthorne - maybe his letters never reached there intended recipient?
Or the rift (as mentioned above) ensured no replies were sent?

The fault could lie with either side, or both!
Never take sides in family arguments - even those from 150 years ago!

I can see a burial in Cawthorne for a Hannah Hattersley buried 18 March 1874 at the time of her death she was living in Crigglestone .
1871 census I can see a Hannah Hattersley age 72 born Cawthorne living in Crigglestone a Widow living with her is a granddaughter Hannah Hawksworth.
I'll see if I can find the family in 1861
