Elenora Wemyss RENDALL
« on: Wednesday 19 February 14 20:02 GMT (UK) »
Doing research for someone.
Looking for a marriage of Magnus CRAIGIE b 29 Oct 1823 Egilsay and Elenora Wemyss RENDALL b 15 Nov 1824 Egilsay. I have tried all sorts of variations on Scotland's People. Magnus and Elenora are on the 1851 census as man and wife.

Elenora was apparently known as Helen Rendall. This is the name on her death certificate where she confirms she was wife of Magnus.

Names on censuses show her as Hellenor, Eleanor and Eleaner.

Elenora died 21 Dec 1878. Helen/Elenora also confirms her parents as Thomas Rendall and Elspet Garson.

Magnus Craigie then married Ann MOWAT, widow. MS Grieve. I have that marriage certificate.

Can anyone help me locate this marriage, please, of Magnus Craigie to Elenora Wemyss Rendall.

Kind regards
Suzie

Hi Suzi,

Have you found the couple on the 1841 Census?

Hallo Looby,

Found Helen on 1841 I think:
1841 Census. Egilsay, Orkney. Thomas 60, Elizabeth 60, John 35 and Hellenor 15. Plus 3 servants. Ref: Genuki/Orkney/Eglisay/1841.

But not found Magnus yet.
His parents were Magnus Craigie and Janet Grieve.

Hi Suzi,

Could this be Magnus -

Living at Eagleshay - Orkney

ROBERTSON       Alexander       M       60       Farmer        Orkney
    ROBERTSON       Jean       F       45               Orkney
CRAIGIE       Magnus       M       15       Agricultural Labourer        Orkney
    CRAIGIE       Rakellor       F       15               Orkney
CRAIGIE       Thomas       M       10       Male Servant        Orkney

Looks like three siblings either on their own or perhaps with a mother and stepfather.
Magnus is only 2 households away from the Rendal  family.

Looby :)

The three Craigie youngsters with Alexander Robertson are probably with their mother Janet/Jean Grieve . There is a marriage 18th May 1838 at Rousay & Egilshay - Jean Greave and Alexander Robison - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYSG-54C.
So Magnus snr must have died pre 1838.
Can't find a marriage between Magnus jnr and Helen Rendell. Did they have children? And were any born after 1855? If so the date and place of parents marriiage should be on birth certificate.

Hallo Looby,

Yes, I think that could be Magnus in 1841. His parents were Magnus Craigie and Janet Grieve so that second marriage looks a possibility too. I'll look at that. It makes sense.

I hadn't thought about birth certs. I forgot that Scottish birth certs sometimes do have parent's marriage date and place. I'll do that. Magnus and Helen/Elenora had 5 children born between 1851 and 1861. Think I'll choose a later child rather than an early one, pre-1855.

Many thanks.

Looby, Just to let you know I have checked 2 of the 5 birth certificates - one pre-1855 and one post-1855 - and they confirm the parent's names as Magnus and Elenor but no date of marriage noted. What a shame. But I have plenty of sources which show they were man and wife on various censuses and certificates; shame I can't get the ultimate proof.

Ah well, you can't win 'em all. Thanks for all your help.

Sometimes records get lost/destroyed or were never kept in the first place pre- 1855. It's a shame you can find Magnus's mums record but not his!
