Help to find James Baillie
« on: Saturday 22 February 14 21:32 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone help to find James Baillie one of twins who was born in Dalmellington on 12 April 1900, He emigrated to Canada in 1923 and married Jemima Gage Cowan originally from Airdrie in Walkerville Essex Ontario in 1927.
It looks like he returned to Glasgow alone on  21 Feb 1932 from New York. Since the I have drawn a blank

Can you tell us what info on that passenger list confirms he is your James Baillie - apart from his age

Occ = chauffeur and address 11 Nithside Terrace Burnbank Kirkconnel

Kirkconnel is Dumfries but James was from Ayrshire

Just need to confirm it is the same James Baillie

Thanks Carole, I believe it is the James Bailie I am looking for as the address in Kirkconnell is where his mother and two uncles lived. The ship he returned on was the Cameronia which belonged to the Anchor Line

Are you sure you have the correct James, as he was born illegitimately to Mary Baillie in 1900 in Dalmellington, but appears as an adopted son in the 1901 census.  His twin (William) soon after his birth.  The James Baillie who married in Canada appears to have gained parents (William Baillie and Mary Scott)

Thanks for the reply, I think I have the correct James Baillie. I assumed that on the wedding certificate he used his mothers middle name Scott as her maiden name and possibly his uncle William as his father to conceal that he was illegitimate. he travelled back to Scotland via New York alone in February 1932 with his mothers address as his destination. it is a puzzle and I may well be wrong with my assumption and so far found no trace of him or his wife .

There is a James Bailey (Different spelling) with 12 April 1900 DOB in the US Social Security Death Index (Texas) who died Jan 1982.  I would attach a clip but my previous two CLIPS (NOT full certificates) were removed by the moderator.

Do you think he returned to Canada or the States, or do you think he remained in the UK?

Interesting, I am at a loss as to where he went after returning to Scotland in 1932 and with no mention of his wife it is a puzzle. Thanks for the post

Likely you have found nothing further also on Jemima, his wife, post 1932? Wondering why he gave a friend's details as nearest relative in Canada on his shipping manifest entry entering the US from Canada, before he departed for Scotland https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XGS5-52Q
