Dodds and McCauley, from Co. Antrim to Mt. Morris, New York
« on: Monday 24 February 14 08:53 GMT (UK) »
Recently, I put this on the genforum site with added information.  I am in search of additional information on the McCauley family.  I have not been able to find anything on Richard McCauley, whose first name might actually be John.  I do have a record of three of his daughters, though:
Sarah Jane McCauley married William Robinson, my great-grandfather, at Ballymena 3rd Presbyterian Church; Jenny (or Jennie) McCauley married William Dodds (see below) and Elizabeth McCauley married James Buchanan.  I am still presently working on the Buchanan connection.  I have a lot of info but  haven't had time to put it in order.  Is anyone else researching these families?

1. Mr. Dodds married and had,

 2. William Dodds (1858-1934)of Scottsburg,; m. Isabelle Flack (Fleck)

 3. Sarah B. Dodds, b. 1893; m. 1913 Grant W. Mastin

 4. Frances Isabelle Mastin m. 1933 Arthur Hall Dodd(s) of Nunda.

 4. Gretchin Mastin m. Mr. Stevens of Caledonia

 4. Beulah Mastin m. Mr. Bedford of Dansville

 4. Grant Mastin, Jr. of Honeoye Falls

 4. Clyde Mastin of Scottsburg

 3. Kathleen Dodds m. Lavern Crane of Scottsburg, farmer and tax assessor, who died 1952, aged 60.

 4. Mrs Walter Tucker of Scottsburg

 4. Mrs Bernice Carpenter of Scottsburg

 4. Andrew Crane of Scottsburg

 4. Gordon Crane of Conesus

 1. John Dodds, b. abt. 1836; m. Martha Houston

 2. William Dodds (1858-1946), b. Ardymaugh; died Groveland; m. 1881 at Wellington St., Presbyterian Church to Jenny McCauley, dau of Richard McCauley, farmer, of Ballyminstra.

 3. Elizabeth Dodds m. George W. Richmond of Groveland (He married next to Roxy G.

 4. Winifred Richmond (c. 1913-1960) m. Kenneth C. Haywood of Mt. Morris, son of Raymond and Inez M. Haywood.

 4. Mrs. Elizabeth Richmond (1911-1974) m. Andrew Erwin (1904-1994), son of Thomas Erwin and Mary Servis.

 4. William Richmond m. 1948 Nellie Elizabeth Linsner, dau of Samuel Burvis Linsner and Selena Burns.

 4. Donald Richmond of Rochester m. Beryl

 4. Ruth Richmond m. Mr. Russell

 4. Kenneth G. Richmond of Dansville (1915-1994) m. Marian Sterner

 2. Susan Dodds, b. abt. 1863; m. Mr Magee, farmer, Co. Antrim

 3. Thomas Magee, b. abt. 1877 (this date suspect)

 3. Jane Magee, b. abt. 1891

 3. Annie Magee, b. abt. 1891

 2. Thomas Dodds, b. abt. 1861, carpenter, Co. Antrim

 2. Bella Dodds m. Mr. Kirkwood

 2. Margaret J. Dodds, b. abt. 1874

 2. Alexander Dodds, b. abt. 1879, carpenter; m. 1905 at 3rd Presbyterian Church, Ballymena, to Sarah J. McCauley

 3. Thomas H. Dodds, b. abt. 1907

 3. John Dodds, b. abt. 1907

 3. William Dodds, b. abt. 1908

 3. Martha Dodds, b. abt. 1910

 3. Robert Dodds, b. abt. 1911

My grandfather was George McCauley Robinson(1881-1972) of Ardymaugh Rd., Ballyalbanagh, Co. Antrim. He was the son of William Robinson and Sarah Jane McCauley. Sarah Jane McCauley and Jenny McCauley were sisters. When my grandfather emigrated from Northern Ireland to the U.S. in 1899, his passage was paid by William Dodds of Mt. Morris, his uncle by marriage. I am looking for other descendents.

There are a few other McCauley-Dodds marriages that took place in N. Ireland. However, as of yet, I do not know if they are connected or not, although one looks very likely:

John Macauley m. 1883 Martha Dodds at Glenwhirry (Glenwherry) Presbyterian Church. This one has a high possibility of being related due to where the marriage took place.

A bit more to add...

1.  James McAuley of Ardymaugh (c. 1809-1874) m. Ellen Brice (c. 1820-1889), both buried in the Glenwherry Presbyterian Cemetery.

2.  Sarah Wison McCauley, not proven as being dau, but my best guess, married at the Kilbride Presbyterian Church to William Adair, d. 1912, school master, and the son of John Adair.

3.  James McAuley Adair, carpenter, b. abt. 1877; m. to Hester

4.  Rachel H. Adair, b. abt. 1900

4.  Ivan Adair, b. abt. 1902

4.  James Adair, b. abt. 1904

4.  Ella S. W. Adair (Ella Sarah Wilson?), b. abt. 1906

3.  Lizzie Adair, b. abt. 1879

3.  William E. Adair, plumber, b. abt. 1883; m. Elsie Speers from Co. Monaghan, dau of Anna Speers.

3.  C. B. Adair--my guess this is Crawford Bryce Adair who emigrated first to Cottonwood, Minnesota and then on to Geneseo, New York.  Crawford married Meta McCurdy (c. 1892-1989), who was also born in N. Ire.

4.  Elizabeth Adair m. John Alfred Gray (c. 1920-2004), the son of Cecil Gray and Mary Young and had issue.

4.  Crawford Bryce Adair, b. abt. 1921 and m. Petra Tibideau (c. 1925-2010), dau of Ezeri Tibideau and Florence Sunnysack of Jeffers, Minnesota.

4.  William John Adair of Geneseo New York.  I have two dates for him:  (1901-1999) and (1916-2002).  Which are correct??  m. Miriam D. who is buried beside him.

5.  Edward Dodds Adair (1939-1997)

This is as far as I have gotten.  Any additional information always helpful.  With many thanks, Paul

Hi, Imgnz,
Do you know what church your branch of the McAuleys belonged to?
One McAuley emigrated from around the Randalstown area and opened a
hotel in Yosemite long ago.  There is some information on genforum about him
that I wrote up long ago.

The 1847 marriage was likely the Randalstown 1st Presbyteria Church.  If not then it was the 2nd Presbyterian. I do have that noted, but not in front of me. The Ewings were Presbyterian.

Margaret McAuley married her cousin, William J Henry of Dunsilly, brother of my 2 X gt grandmother. My 3 X gt grandmother was Eliza Ewing.

Is your McAuley family  related to the Macaulay family of Crumlin and Larne who were
very prominent mill owners at one time?

Hi Paul,

Sorry I don't know if the McAuley's of Tamlaght were realted to the miller family of Crumlin. I have no local knowledge of the family and it is a side branch of my Ewing family. I have visited the area only once in 1999. The Drummaul tombstone inscription below was noted on that visit.

William John McAuley was a farmer and son of John McAuley another farmer.

To The Memory Of

William J McAuley, Caddy Who died 29th October 1894 aged 70 years
Also his son Robert Who died 7 March 1890 aged 27 years
Also his wife Agnes Ewing McAuley  Who died 22 Jan’y 1896   aged 70years
And his daughter Tillie who died 11th Feb 1900 aged 28 years
Also Maggie wife of Thomas McAuley Who died 4 Dec 1911 aged 38 yrs
And Thomas  McAuley died 20 November 1927   aged 61 yrs
Also   Mary S  McAuley beloved wife of W J McAuley  jnr,  died 22 Jan 1931 aged 29 years

Also   Annie daughter of above W J McAuley died 14 Nov 1935 aged 77 years

Also William John McAuley son of above Thomas McAuley died 28 Apr 1954.

Not on this very crowded tombstone is John Johnston (presumed son of William John & Agnes) who was also a farmer in Tamlaght in 1901. His son William John McAuley b1893 was killed in France in 1918.

Cheers

Linda
