Mate of Dover
« on: Thursday 27 February 14 07:40 GMT (UK) »
Researching the life and activities of the nineteenth century printer, Mate, in Dover.  It looks as if this was Charles Mate, also a noted actor; but there may have been other family members who printed (for instance, it looks as if there was a son with the same name).  Mate would appear to have been working at around the time of Waterloo and up until the accession of Queen Victoria.

Any detail gratefully received.

You again, begob!

What can I say other than thank you?  But don't tell me that you can lay hands on material for the Angus family in Newcastle, printers?  I'm off on that search, too, you see.

Bless,

roly

I have a transcript of a diary written between 1796 and 1800 by my 4 x Gr grandfather who was a friend of Charles Mate. He is mentioned quite a lot. Does this interest you?

There are many Mate entries in the Parish Register of St Mary's Church, Dover.

An example of three,
29 Mar 1829 29 Eliza D of Charles & Hester MATE b. 22 Jan; otp Printer
27 Apr 1831 Harriet D of Charles & Hester MATE b. 05 Apr; otp Printer
1 May 1840 Charles Miette S of Charles & Hester MATE otp Printer

The earliest baptism as found in the Parish is in 1756.

Charles the father of the above family (my assumption) was baptised in 1805 to Charles and Hannah Mate.

Looks like the family?

Tony ???

The Charles Mate mentioned in the diary is the actor and one time owner of the theatre in Margate.
There are family trees on Ancestry.co.uk which state that he was born in 1746 to Charles Miette (Mate) and Nicoll Desjardin (French Protestants). He married Judith Wood and died in 1825. His daughter Ann married the actor Samuel Thomas Russell.
