Catholic baptism records - Thomas Elsmore, Cwmbran
« on: Friday 28 February 14 10:32 GMT (UK) »
Are catholic records available online?
My relative was bought up Catholic and as I can't see his birth being registered, I was thinking of checking parish records.
The census says he was born in Llanvihangel Llantarnam. How can I check parish records for him?
His name was Thomas Elsmore and was born in abt 1859. His sister was Mary Ann and his mother was Ellen. His father was James, but had died by 1861 census.

Could this be his birth registration from freebmd

March qtr 1859
ELLESMOR    Thomass        Newport M    11a   191
ELLESMORE    Thomas        Newport M    11a   191

The GRO index reads Thomas Ellesmor

Yes definitely! I've learned not to rely on spelling anymore. Think that's me off to order a birth certificate then. Why would there be two entries?

There are not two entries it is just that the transcribers have read it differently.  Before you order it I would suggest that you click the spectacles alongside the entry and then click view the original then you can see for yourself what the entry reads.  You will need to order it with this information and not the wrong spellings on freebmd.

I have just looked again at it and there could be an E on the end of the surname  :-\
