RYDER or RIDER in Barrow & Quorndon mystery.
« on: Saturday 01 March 14 13:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

The 1851 Census shows the family of Elizabeth RIDER at New Quorndon.
Only the youngest child, Eliza was born at Quorndon the other RIDER children were born at Barrow-upon-Soar; where the family lived in 1841.

The Mystery is where was her second husband Robert RYDER/RIDER..
.. and what happened to him ?

On 3 June 1855 at the Baptist Chapel, Quorndon; Elizabeth married John BLACK, of Barrow.

Elizabeth's daughter Ann is my Great Grandmother.

All help is welcome.

In 1841 - no Robert Rider.  Elizabeth's occ is shown as widow but then crossed out.  In addition to the children shown above - the 1841 has a Henry Rider aged 11

Perhaps Robert was a seaman

There is a Robert Rider transported 1837 and I notice there is a bit of a gap in the children, are they all Robert's children only there doesn't seem to be a death either or is it me!

Had to have a look...
Looking at convict indents, a Robert Rider labourer, was married with 6 children.

Publication:Leicestershire Mercury

Publication date:Saturday 11 March 1837

... ROBERT RIDER, 36, was charged with stealing a stone-bottle and several other articles,-the property of Jonathan Sawyer, of Barrow-on-Soar

In 1843, Elizabeth Ryder of Barrow-on-Soar is assaulted by Jane Hall, I only mention it as it was a James hall who was awaiting transportation, that told the authorities that Robert had confessed to him. Jane is married to Benjamin Hall and son Francis ie all 3, are also charged with beating and assaulting James Rudkin in the article but doesn't really say if it was connected with Elizabeth.

I can't find a death either - if the transportation was Robert - then it means Elizabeth had 3 subsequent children by somebody else

I think Robert married 1822 to Jane Pick, there's a burial for Jane wife of Robert and the marriage to Elizabeth Fewkes in Leicester both wid 1835

Baptism
25-Jun   1841   Rider   Thomas   birth 29-Oct   1824      Robert   Jane               Barrow upon Soar   LEI
Loughborough, Leicester Road   Wesleyan Methodist

He marries Elizabeth Olive 17 Jun 1850

The burial

RIDER   JANE   29   AUG   1833   41   WIFE OF ROBERT

Andrew was probably married at the register office looking at Barrow disc I have

Hi,

Thanks CaroleW and willsy for your input.

The Transportation item is most interesting.

Additional Data is that Elizabeth FEWKES( nee FISHER ) married Robert RIDER/RYDER at St. Margaret's, Leicester on 6 June 1835. N.B. I have yet to see the Parish Register entry so do not know if he was a widower or if the marriage was by Banns or Licence.

I do not know where Robert was born or died; and so have NOT identified him in either the 1841 or 1851 Census.  Also; I do not know his occupation.

Although Elizabeth's 1855 marriage was at a Baptist Chapel; I do not know if she was a Baptist before. So a check of the CofE records may show some children.

JonJon   Born Loughborough but now in Toronto; a long way from Leicestershire.

Jane   Pick   OTP      Spin

Leicester, St. Margaret   09-Jun   1835   Banns

There's a thread in the common room about it

and I've used it too.

Do a lot of my shopping in Loughborough
