Richard Ellis and Descendants: Birkenhead and Bootle
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 16:30 GMT (UK) »
Richard Ellis, b c1818/19 Bryncroes (Carnarfon?) married to Sarah Thomas b Minera, Nr Wrexham c 1816/17. They had 6 children that I know of: Thomas, b London 1844/5 and the others born in Amlwch: Margaret Anne b 1846; John Samuel b 1848; William Rowland b 1850/1; Edward Rowland b 1853; Robert Evans b 1855/56.

Richard was a police officer in London from c1840 and resurfaced in Amlwch as the Police Officer in Amlwch on the birth of Margeret in 1846. The family next appear in the 1861 census where Richard is shown as the Police Inspector living at the Lockuphouse, Newry Street, Holyhead. The family disappear after 1865 before re-emerging in Birkenhead in 1870, although I have still to trace them in the 1871 census. Richard, his wife and their descendants lived out the remainder of their lives in Birkenhead and later Bootle.

It has so far proved impossible to find records of birth for Richard or Sarah with any degree of certainty. That is my brick wall and would be interested to hear from anyone who could provide and further information.

John Ellis

Hi

They appear to have married after 1837 so a copy of their marriage cert should give you their respective fathers names and occupations

Thanks Carole,

Already tried that but nothing in the BMD indexes.  May have been NCs but still have not found anything.

March 1849 and Richard is still in Amlwch.
He is mentioned in the North Wales Chronicle

Also in 1853 he was presented with a silver medal by the inhabitants of Amlwch for his unremitting perseverance in apprehending felons during a period of nine years.
On the 28 Feb 1851 he singlehandedly apprehended 7 men.

Also in the paper is the birth on 27 November 1855, of a son to the wife of Richard Ellis police officer Amlwch. That must be Robert.

Did you get Sarah's maiden name from one of their childrens birth certs?
