St Agnes Churchyard, Kiwitea
« on: Wednesday 05 March 14 01:36 GMT (UK) »
Endeavouring to locate family connections and details of a few people buried in the St Agnes Churchyard at Kiwitea near Feilding. The burial registers are very sparse on information, in some cases having only a surname, no first names or a date even.

Hoping some other RCers can help with identifying them. Some of them are likely to be children, as a couple of others that had not a lot about them turned out to be just that.

The families would have been in the Kiwitea area anywhere from 1890 to perhaps late 1920s, and then moved away. Have also been through Paperspast, which did help to solve a couple of the unknowns, but not these ones. The first burial at the Churchyard was in 1890.

The names are

ARMSTRONG - surname only no date
Miss ADAMS
W LACEY
Mrs Jane GREEN 1923
GW STILL infant 1930

Another family that we do not know too much about is a Reginald and Emily HILL, who had a son Reginald born and died in 1898. Can't find anything further about them.

Also an Alfred PAINE who married a Margaret HOPE in 1894. They had a son Jabez Alfred who was born and died in 1895. The mother Margaret died at the same time. What happened to Alfred the father, and where did he come from.

Thanks
Ian C

Hi Ian,

It looks like he and a brother named Jabez PAINE arrived per the Ionic to Auckland in December 1886. They were intending to go on to Wellington.

The Fielding Star mentions a bankruptcy relating to a contractor named John Arthur PAINE of Cheltenham who was in business with an Alfred PAINE, trading as Paine Brothers.

NZBDM lists an Alfred PAYNE who died in 1914 aged 63 (e.g. born circa 1851).

And the Evening Post mentions an Alfred PAYNE, aged about 30 and single, who in November 1912 at Wellington ingests nitric acid. Was still alive at time of publication.

Thanks for the info. Think I might have found them in 1871 census. There is a Jabez PAINE and family in Roxton, Beds, and amongst children are Jabez aged 6, John A aged 4 and Alfred aged 3. Fits with the names on the Ionic and the bankruptcy notice.

There is an Alfred PAYNE death in 1941 aged 74 which could fit.
