George Willan
« on: Thursday 06 March 14 15:08 GMT (UK) »
George Willan was my 4x great grandfather.

He was born about 1810 in Mansergh, Westmorland and was married three times and had at least 16 children.

His first wife was Elizabeth Hartley.  They married on 27 June 1825 inKendal, Westmorland according to familysearch.

The same website tells me he married Agnes Taylor on 5 November 1829 and his third marriage was in 1832 (no idea of the date yet).

I am trying to sort out which children belonged to which mother and have got in a bit of a pickle with it as much of the dates (I only have years from familysearch again) don't make sense.

Here are the children as I have them on my family tree programme.  I think these have been repeated on the site I got the information from.

Elizabeth (c1826)
John (c1828)
Ann (c1833-1885, my 3x great grandmother who married William Huddlestone)
Henry (c1834-1842)
Jane (c1835)
George (c1836)
John (c1836)
Thomas (c1838)
Duckett (c1832-1898)
George (c1836)
John (c1836)
Joseph (c1838)
Richard (c1840)
William (c1842)
Agnes (c1845)
Rodger (c1849)

I would be very grateful for any help received with this query.  I am very confused with this family and would like to sort it out.

Thanks.

Your list of 16 has some duplication.  Same names and same years of birth.   Have you looked at the parish register?   There may be more than one family here.

Could this be the christening of George?

George Willan

birth: 1 September 1796
christening: 1 January 1797 KENDAL,WESTMORLAND,ENGLAND

father: John Willan
mother: Mary

How do you know that he was married 3 times? Do you have the deaths of his first 2 wives?

Ducket Willan
christening: 28 October 1832 Mansergh, Westmoreland, England
residence:  Mansergh, Westmoreland, England
father: George Willan   mother: Agnes

Ann Willan
christening: 1834 MANSERGH, WESTMORELAND, ENGLAND
residence:  Mansergh, Westmorland, England
father: George Willan  mother: Agnes

John Willan
christening: 10 April 1836 Mansergh, Westmoreland, England
residence:  Mansergh, Westmoreland, England
father: George Willan  mother: Agnes

Joseph Willan
christening: 1838 MANSERGH, WESTMORELAND, ENGLAND
residence:  Mansergh, Westmorland, England

Unless the children were born before 1832, why would Agnes be down as their mother if George had a new wife in 1832 ???
