Armoury Court, Wenlock Road, Shrewsbury. Was There a Local Brickworks?
« on: Tuesday 11 March 14 20:27 GMT (UK) »
An ancestor of mine and his large family are shown as living at Armoury Yard in Wenlock Road, Shrewsbury in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. His occupation was " Bricksetter". I'm guessing that he may have shared a property/ living space with other families? Does anyone know what that area of Shrewsbury was like at that time? Also were there brickworks nearby?

"Old Maps"    http://old-maps.co.uk/index.html

click on link and enter coordinates  351752   312246
when all maps loaded, click on 1903 map
when loaded in main window, click on main window to zoom (anywhere except red box marked "Enhanced Zoom"!!)
using slider bars you should be able to find "The Armoury" between Wenlock and London Road - South West of map.. There is a Brick and Tile Works to the East, on the Shropshire Union Canal

I know some time has passed but I have been doing research for a work project and in doing so started reading up about The Armoury. If you haven't already stumbled across it, this may be of interest: http://shrewsburylocalhistory.org.uk/armoury.htm
