The marriage certificate from the All Saints register for 1907 has John McKenzie, 270 Macquarie St and James Moody, Sandfly, Huon as the witness'.

Mary Ann Moody's parents are listed as James Moody (farmer) and Elizabeth Moody (nee Jones) Her birth place is given as Leslic (??), Huon age 21.

Thank you to everyone who has replied and most especially for the look up.  That was very kind :) It will be interesting to see what information I can get from the other baptisms.  It is very tricky to search for unknown parents of Elizabeth Jones.  I am giving it my best shot though.

Apologies for the information being a bit disjointed.

Baptisms may only list the parents as James and Elizabeth with no mention of Elizabeth's maiden name.

There are frequently mistranscriptions of and incorrect information on certificates.

The MIís in the newspapers for the deaths of Elizabeth and James MOODY also mentioned a brother Thomas Henry and his birth was registered at Hobart with father Henry!! and mother Elizabeth JONES.  One of the MI's mention Inserted by her dau and his sister M L KEMP. Snug River.

HOBART, Monday.-An inquest was held at Sandfly to-day into the circumstances attending tho death of Thomas Henry Moody (46), a farmer. The evidence showed that deceased
was returning home from Hobart under tho influence of liquor, and was found lying on the roadside about a mile and a half from home. Dr. Hodgkinson was summoned and pronounced life extinct.
Tho doctor deposed that death was due to a lacerated liver, causing internal hemorrhage, through being run over by a cart. A verdict to that effect was returned.

Marriage
MOODY James 35 years
JONES Elizabeth 22 years
4 May 1871  Reg#177/1871

Perhaps this illegitimate birth should be investigated along with the mother's possible marriage a few years later.  If only the names weren't SMITH and JONES ::)

Birth
JONES Elizabeth
Father not named.  Mother Maria JONES
20 Sep 1851
At Hobart Reg#727/1851

and this marriage which may be the reason for the JONES/SMITH surnames for Elizabeth.

JONES Maria 31 years
SMITH James 30 years
29 Mar 1854
At Hobart   Reg#542/1854

There is only one birth registered in 1861 to this couple.  I would suggest that there were more births that weren't registered.

Thank you for all the trouble Cando.  Yes there are eight children to James Moody and Elizabeth Jones and James also had six earlier children. My great-grandmother who was most definitely always known as Amy Louisa Moody, is the youngest born 4/1/1888 Sandfly, Tasmania and died 10/6/1960 Toronto, NSW. So as she is down as Annie there is another discrepancy!
Re: MOODY  Annie Louisa

As for Elizabeth Jones estimated year of birth and birth place of Hobart re her death certificate, there is no birth around 1849/1850 in Hobart that fits.
Note: Another Elizabeth Jones b. 20/9/1850 died as an infant d.3/4/1853 of "teething". Born to a Cascades FF convict Maria Jones (the birth appears on her conduct record) with Father Unknown, "the mate of a vessel".

It certainly is a tricky one.

Interestingly, someone has a John McKenzie and the above marriage and child you are suggesting on a public Ancestry Tree, re the look up:
The marriage certificate from the All Saints register for 1907 has John McKenzie, 270 Macquarie St and James Moody, Sandfly, Huon as the witness'.

Mary Ann Moody's parents are listed as James Moody (farmer) and Elizabeth Moody (nee Jones) Her birth place is given as Leslic (??), Huon age 21.

Name:
John Henry McKenzie

Birth Date:
31 Dec 1886

Father's Name:
John Henry McKenzie

Mother's name:
Elizabeth Veron Robertson

Birth Place:
Tasmania

Registration Year:
1887

Registration Place:
Hobart, Tasmania

Registration Number:
82

Maybe?

Just confusing with the death of the infant to the convict Maria. I am totally sleep deprived on night shifts so apologies if anything I am saying sounds totally crazy!

I treat all online trees with caution and haven't looked at any in this instance.  I do not use any indexes on ancestry as many have found they have omissions and errors. Anyway not everyone has access to ancestry.

I use my own resources for Tasmanian bdm's to 1930.

I certainly wouldn't get too hung up on ages...genealogy is far from an exact science :)  Info on death certs if often wrong and depends on the knowledge of the informant.

It is possible that Elizabeth JONES was not born in Tasmania.

Ah...remember that sleep deprived feeling albeit it many, many years ago ;D

Cheers

Here is a random example of what the document looks like:

Debra  :)

I can't thank you enough Debra. Have now found three pertinent marriages certificates to this family. Though I may make a cheeky request for some of the later marriages of the siblings that are unavailable here.

This is Elizabeth Jones and James Moody's 4 May 1871 marriage at All Saints Church, Hobart:

A bit more information to do your head in - death and in memorium notices...

16 July 1906, Hobart Mercury
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/12821037

BRENT- On Sunday, July 15, 1906, at Hobart, Joseph, beloved husband of Sarah Brent, aged 50 years. Funeral will leave his late residence, 83 Patrick street, on Tuesday, the 17th inst., at 2.30, tor Queenborough Cemetery.

15 July 1907, Hobart Mercury
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/9927586

BRENT - In fond and loving memory of my dear husband, Joseph Brent, died July 15th 1906.  Inserted by his loving wife and family, and niece, S. Moody.

Joseph BRENT and Sarah SMITH married in 1882 at Hobart when Sarah was aged 17, the daughter of a labourer.  Two of the witnesses were Richard SMITH and Annie SMITH.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1951-35345-5888-77

Joseph and Sarah BRENT were witnesses at the marriage of Robert Richard SMITH in 1886, who appears to be the only child registered to James SMITH and Maria JONES in 1861, and seems to have usually used just the name 'Richard'.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1961-35346-10429-84

Richard's death confirms his age:

SMITH - On Sunday, September 30, 1900, at his residence, 300 Macquarie street, Robert Richard, the beloved husband of Esther Smith, In the 39th year of his age. Funeral will leave the above address on TUESDAY AFTERNOON, at 2.30, for Queenborough Cemetery, when friends are respectfully invited to attend.

Sarah SMITH/BRENT remarried to Frederick PETERSON after Joseph's death.  Her son Percival's WW1 service record names her as Sarah PETERSON of Brisbane Street, Hobart but I cannot find her on electoral rolls.

My head is spinning ??? I have just written an email to someone who has been researching this family.  I think their are more children than Richard.

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/AUS-Tasmania/2009-02/1234322510

Sarah Moody, who could be "S Moody" is the only child of Elizabeth Jones/Moody whose marriage I cannot find indexed. Her partner (to use 21st century parlance) was Sydney Browne and their child was born in 1909, so possibly she could be still Moody then.

Thanks Debra.  It is certainly interesting ;) I will post the other marriages that perhaps someone will help look up.
