I have a birth certificate from Linton in 1841 and wonder if anyone can tell me why the certificate heading reads " The Linton Union " please ?

Perhaps the birth was at Linton Union Workhouse  Cambridgeshire .

It may also refer to the Union area at that time not necessarily the workhouse itself.   The address of the birth should be in that column - not the heading on the certificate.   See Genuki which says that Linton is the head of a Poor-law Union embracing 20 parishes in the county of Cambridge, and 2 in that of Essex.
