He worked outside the Custom House [indoor officer] in the docks supervising and collecting duty on cargo and visiting bonded warehouses in various locations in some instances dealt with probate.

Hello, do you have a source for this, please?  I have found that I am related to one (Shhh!!), and before I found your post I had assumed that it was someone who performed some function at the exit or out-door of the customs house.

The indoor officer dealt with ships masters reporting their arrival/ cargo etc, collecting fees for other agencies such as light dues, registering vessels or recording a change of owner/ ships name, receiver of wreck etc - mainly duties of a clerical administration. The outdoor officers were as described engaged in practical work, visited bonded warehouse etc and supervising cargo.

Spent today going back to my 5 x Great Grandmother who was born in 1781 in Fife Scotland. Had a  "possible" birth record for her. Could I prove who her parents were ? No way I thought as I had assumed she had died before 1855 (Scotland) before official registration came into force. It was put on the back burner many moons ago.

Following a census record for 1861 which I thought was an outside chance I got her death record in 1869 and her "possible" parents are correct.

Sorry to go on and on but I am so pleased to have found this. ;D ;D

Now the connection to this post - Her father, my 6 x Great Grandfather,  is recorded as an Out Door Officer HM Customs. What on earth was that ?  so I googled it and got the link to this topic on Rootschat.

Thank you so much cemetery friends and good old Rootschat a winner again.
