Cowan: Robert James and Dorothy
« on: Wednesday 26 March 14 10:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

I have Robert James Cowan b.1898 Poplar and his sister Dorothy b.1909 Sr George in the East.  I dont think they ever met as they had two different fathers and mother Eliza Cowan nee Killingback (b.1876 Poplar) seemed to spend her years from abt 1900 in and out of lunatic asylums.

I have info on Dorothy until the late 1930's and info on Robert on the 1911 census when he was also given the extra surname Andrews by his aunt and uncle with whom he resided from a very young age. (I have both their birth certs and census info)

Does anyone have any info at all on these two people after the dates mentioned? I would be grateful for anything.
Thanks
Sally

Hi,
I am one of Dorothy's daughters and have also been trying to find the same information but it sounds like we both got to the same stage roughly. I would be very grateful to know if you have got any further since your post.
Many thanks,
Mary

Did occur to me that if the aunt and uncle left a will Robert  might be named, or on either of their death certificates

You didn't give the name of the aunt and uncle or where they lived on 1911

Louisa Maud

added found him on 1901 and 1911

I have seen a military enlistment for a Robert Andrews.  He joined the Duke of Cornwall light Infantry 31st March 1916 in White City.  He gave his age as 18 years 1 month and place of birth as Chelsea. He was discharged 16th June for giving a false age.  Did not give any details of family but gave his fathers address as 1 Bedford Cottage, Bedford, Terrace, Chelsea.

The Robert James Cowan enlisted with the Royal Irish Rifles first embarkation was October 1915 when your Robert would have been just 17 years. Young men did lie about their age but he would have needed to have been 19 years to have been sent overseas.
