Thomas Davies Death approx 1888
« on: Friday 28 March 14 17:51 GMT (UK) »
1844/45  Thomas Davies born Mold, Flintshire (s/o Evan and Sarah)
Thomas was a coal miner
In 1867, 16th nov , age 23 he marries Elizabeth Smith at Wrexham
In 1871 Thomas and Elizabeth are at Broughton
1872 William Davies their son born at Minera
1876 Wrexham district, wife Elizabeth dies
1877 , Sept, Thomas Davies (widower) marries Sarah Smith (widow), Wrexham (i have copy of cert)
1881 Thomas (b 1847) and Sarah are in Gresford/Gwersyllt area with family living at Kings Head pub
Thomas and Sarah move to Durham (as does one of Thomas's brothers) to work in the coal mines up there

1886 jul-aug-sept Daughter Lena Davies born Spennymoor, Durham
1888 at Wrexham oct-nov-dec Sarah Davies widow marries Thomas Moss

I am trying to find a death for Thomas between daughter Lena Davies being concieved and Sarah marrying again 1888
The problem is that they moved around for the coal mining , so it could be Wales, Durham or even Shropshire,
any suggestions appreciated

Hi Colin and Emyr and thank you for your replies  :)
Yes I saw that Auckland dist  death too
Reg 1888 jul-aug-sept
Thanks for extra info on district
There is a death recorded on the Durham Coal Mine Museum website

Howden Colliery
Davis Thomas -Death -3rd Sept 1888- coal hewer - fall of roof from a slip, breaking down some props.

but the age is out , as it has this Thomas as age 37
Someone  has posted asking for info on there about this Thomas  and i have sent message.
Wonder if it same Thomas or a different fellow as  there does seem to be quite a few coal miner chaps from Wales who move up there
Thomas wife Sarah (widow) marries Thomas Moss coal miner , Dec 1888 Wrexham
Thomas's brother Isaac b 1850 Cilcain/Wrexham area, coal miner,  also moved  up to Spennymoor . Isaac is living Halfmoon Lane 1891 with wife Margaret . Margaret is as widow 1901

Hi
FreeBMD gives Thomas Davis' age at death as 43; looking at original document confirms that it is correctly transcribed.
Are you sure you've got the correct record for 1881 Census ? There is a Thomas Davis age 36, Coalminer, born North wales, living in Shildon, County Durham (near Bishop Auckland); wife Sarah 26, born Middridge, Co. Durham (close by); son William 5, born Middridge; daughter Elizabeth H, born Shildon
Emyr.

Hi Emyr  :)
Yes am pretty sure I have right Thomas and Sarah on 1881 census at Gwersyllt living Kings head pub.
We know Sarah sometimes worked as a barmaid and also family remembered her elder son "uncle Jack" Smith, who is on census with them.
Thomas I think has knocked a few years off his age on the 1881 census . He is born 1847 on that census but is 1845 on others.
Its quite complicated because Sarah marries 3 times. All coal miners.
The name Smith crops up a lot too.

1845 Thomas born Mold, s/o Evan Davies  and Sarah nee Foulkes
1851 Sarah Edwards born Nercwys  (d/o Evan Edwards and his much younger wife Charlotte nee Smith)
1867 Thomas Davies marries Elizabeth Smith at Wrexham both of Bersham (Thomas father Evan)
1872 William Davies their son born at Minera
1874 Sarah Edwards marries John Smith at Nercwys
1875 John "Jack" Smith born Minera
1872-1877 Elizabeth Davies and John Smith senior die
1877 Thomas Davies widower marries Sarah Smith widow (I have copy of cert, both fathers named) at Wrexham, both of Broughton (Wrexham)
1880 son Arthur Davies born Gwersyllt
1881 census at Gwersyllt Thomas Davies b 1847, wife Sarah, sons William and baby Arthur and stepson John Smith.
1881- 1884 Family move to Durham area (at some point brother also coal miner Isaac Davies b 1850 too, living Spennymoor 1891)
1884 - Alfred Davies born Browney , Durham
1886 Sept - Lena Davies born Spennymoor, Durham
1886- 1888 Thomas Davies/Davis dies at ?
1888 ? - widow Sarah and family move back to Wales
1888 Dec - Sarah Davies marries Thomas Moss Wrexham district
1891 census Moss family (including all stepchildren) are in Southsea/Bersham
Thomas Moss and Sarah have a son together named Enoch
