Millholme House, Musselburgh
« on: Friday 04 April 14 01:18 BST (UK) »
My 2xggrandfather, John Brown, died a pauper lunatic in this establishment in 1865.  I have today emailed Lothian Health Services to see if they still have any record of him.
In case this is unsuccessful I would appreciate any other suggestions from anyone who has made similar enquiries regarding MillholmeHouse.  Would anyone happen to know the address  of the property?
Also, where would a deceased patient most likely be buried?
Thank you,
Bill

Page 8 of this directory of Musselburgh makes reference to its location being on the High Street behind the West Mill http://deriv.nls.uk/dcn23/8518/85188344.23.pdf

The house is shown on the National Library of Scotland  six inch maps 1843-82 edition http://maps.nls.uk/view/74426702

Zoom in and it is at the west end of the High Street. to the southeast of the River Esk, on the corner with Dalrymple Lane

Hi ,

I used to work in the telephone exchange in Musselburgh, at rear of government office in Mansfield Road. We looked over what would have been Mill Holme and at that time late 60's it was used by Police for parking their vehicles etc. I cannot remember any large building there so it must have been away by then.

Hi All

Bill, a possible burial location? Inveresk Churchyard, Musselburgh, see www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/record/rcahms/53821/musselburgh-inveresk-parish-church-and-graveyard/rcahms

Given circumstances, possibly buried in common ground at whichever cemetery he was buried at?

There's a really good description of the conditions at the House in the appendix to the Royal Lunacy Commision for Scotland Report 1855.

That is a very interesting and comprehensive report; thank you for that Alb.  Also makes this Brown appreciate how well off he is living in suburban Oz!
Cheers, Bill.

Hi Bill,

I read the account of the horrific conditions there, and I know what you mean, they were really terrible living conditions.

I have found the home in the 1851 census on Freecen, you have to select "Midlothian" s the county, "Mackay" as surname, "Peter" as forename. http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Press on "Count" it will after a short time, give some results, Press "Find". The patients are only given "initials" there is a JB who was a 28yo Weaver from Dunfermline in Fife. Could this be your relative?
