Alexander Miller .. Help Please?
« on: Tuesday 08 April 14 11:40 BST (UK) »

Can any one assist me please?

My great great grand parents were Alexander Miller (born 1829 .. Alva Stirlingshire)  and Margaret Miller (born c. 1830) married 04.09.1847 at Dollar, Clackmannan.

I can trace them through the 1851 Census with one child John born 1850 at Alva Stirlingshire, the 1861 Census with two children John born 1850 at Alva and Janet born 1848 at Dollar, Clackmannan, then finally the 1871 Census with the one child Janet (Jessie born 1848 and 3 lodgers).

After 1871 the trail seems to vanish.

These records came from Scotland's People and Ancestry.Com

There was also a child Robert Miller born 1852 who does not feature in any of the Census returns.

I know that Janet (Jessie) married James Bryce and went to New Zealand in 1875.

What happened to the rest of the Miller family in particular the parents Alexander and Margaret?

Any assistance or information to locate them would be much appreciated as I will be visiting Scotland in August.

Hello Alex G.

Where did Janet/Jessie Miller, marry James Bryce, was it Scotland, and how do you arrive at the 1875. date of them appearing in New Zealand.

By the way Alexander, and Margaret Miller's, three children are down as born in Dollar, Clackmannan.

Regards,
Jonn.

Rommina and John

Good morning and greetings from New Zealand.

I have never heard previously that my Alexander Miller completed any military service.  Our records to date is that he was born on 01.04.1829 the son of Peter Miller and Mary White in the Parish of Stirling.  There was three other siblings James, Helen and Mary all baptised in 1833.

Now with regard James Bryce and Janet (Jessie) Miller I have never located a marriage certificate.  Her marriage is recorded on her Death Certificate in 1933 here in New Zealand  as married in Wishaw, Scotland at age of 20 years.

James and Jessie Bryce had two children in Scotland, Margaret in 1872 and Alexander in 1875.  Both children died at sea when the family emigrated to New Zealand aboard the vessel Aldergrove which arrived at Port Chalmers, Otago on July 25th 1875.

They are my great grand parents.

There is another post active on "Deciphering and Reconigition Help" where I put up the 1871 Census for Alexander Miller to establish the names of the Parish and Village.  Overnight it shows that in the 1901 Census Alexander Miller was in the New Monkland Poorhouse , New Monkland Lanarkshire.

I shall have to close either one or the other post or combine both.

Much appreciate your interest and help.

Thank you

Alex G ;D

Hi Alex

Just one thing on dates and years. With Janet born 1848 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYKV-8HD and an age of 20 when she married, this takes to you c. 1868-9 when she supposedly married. You have her you say on the 1871 census with her parents. What was her marital status on this census entry?

James and Jessie Bryce had two children in Scotland, Margaret in 1872 and Alexander in 1875.  Both children died at sea when the family emigrated to New Zealand aboard the vessel Aldergrove which arrived at Port Chalmers, Otago on July 25th 1875.

Have you been able to find these two births for their children? They would let you confirm marriage details.

....Then again, they may not have married? Therefore, possibility that children, Margaret and Alexander, could have been registered only under the name of Miller as an illigitimate birth.

Have you found James Bryce on the 1871 census? He was c.20 years older than Janet from your dates? His parents' details that you have, are they from his death cert in NZ?

Monica

James Bryce was born on 25.12.1844.  Not sure where you get the c.20 years from.

In the 1871 Census Janet "Jessie" Miller was "daughter" living at home with her parents Alexander Miller and Margaret Miller.

Janet Miller's 1st child was born illegitimate in 1872.  I have the Birth Cert.  Her 2nd child Alexander was born  in 1874.  I have this Birth Cert as well.  Alexander's father was declared on the Birth Cert as James Bryce.

Also on the Birth Cert for Alexander was an entry for a record of marriage as 31st December 1872 at Dollar,  Clackmannanshire.

Moving forward to Janet Bryce's (nee Miller) death in 1933 in New Zealand is an entry on her Death Cert that she was married in Wishaw, Scotland at age 20.

We now have two records of marriage, both different as well.

The fact is since I first placed this post there has been no record of marriage discovered for James Bryce and Janet "Jessie" Bryce either in New Zealand, Scotland or anywhere else.

James and Janet Bryce nee Millar were never married.
