Maids of Officers Wives abroad
« on: Friday 11 April 14 01:26 BST (UK) »
Have just read a book on the 48th British Regiment garrison in Tasmania in the early 1800s.
Many of the Officers Wives brought maids with them.
There was also another Regiment, the 46th garrisoned in Van Diemens Land(Tasmania) from 1804.
I'm searching for a Catherine McDonnel born abt 1803 who married in Hobart April 1823.
Certain details suggest she could have been a maid.
Catherine who was "Free" could not read/write -- she "made her mark" X whilst her husband John Boucher (a convict) signed his name. Her name on the marriage cert had been altered from McDonnell to McDonnel.  Who changed it?
Would sks have records of Maid's names they could help me with?
Kind regards

Do you know when and where Catherine died? Her death cert. may hold some answers if the informant of her death knew her well.

Hi Giblet,
Unfortunately I do not know when and where she died.
Have her registration of 1823 marriage and the marriage returns from the church for that period.
And have her children's birth registrations giving her maiden name as
"McDonnel" except for the youngest which has "McDonald".
The 1811- 1821 Musters are available for viewing, but alas they are held in Sydney archives.
Thanks for your interest.
KInd regards

Do you know if the kids stayed in Tasmania or went elsewhere? Do you have anything on Catherine and John after the kids were born?

Might be able to track Catherine down through them and family notices.

Just trying to work backwards and see if anything shows up along the way.

Not sure if this is progress or not but found this .. no mention of Catherine but shows John died before 1873.

The Mercury (Hobart, Tas. : 1860 - 1954)
Saturday 17 May 1873
MANSFIELD.—On 11th May, in the 32nd year of her age, after  a long and painful illness, Sophia, the wife of John Mansfield, and youngest daughter of the late John Boucher , of  Kangaroo Valley, leaving six young children to lament her loss.

Hi there,

I am popping some  links for your earlier threads to help other RChatters avoid duplicating efforts.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=682235.0  (Tasmania 1800 to 1823 on Armed Forces Board)

I wonder if there is a connection between Norfolk Island and Catherine…..  afterall the folk at NI were moved to Port Dalrymple in the 1800s, around 1813.   See Norfolk Island as a heading at the (NSW) Colonial Secretary’s Index 1788-1825.
http://colsec.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/colsec/default.htm
I understand that at present the SR NSW has a partnership arrangement with Ancestry and that includes Ancestry uploading quite a lot of the digitised files from the 1788-1825 Col Sec index.  So it might be worthwhile looking at all the McDonnel/ll and McDonald and Macdonald (and variations) in those NSW Col Sec's papers.  (VDL's administration was conducted under the authority of the NSW Governor until VDL was hived off from NSW in 1820s)

Bendigo Advertiser (Vic. : 1855 - 1918)
Thursday 23 March 1871

Fanny Fern is now sixty, Alice Carey forty-eight, Harriot Beecher Stove fifty-six,
and Catherine Boucher seventy.

So did she move to VIC  ??? Age fits. Can a death be found for her there?
