Benjamin HUGGETT @ St. Swithun's, East Grinstead, Sussex
« on: Friday 11 April 14 02:29 BST (UK) »
I have already obtained high quality larger version of the image shown at http://www.gravestonephotos.com/public/gravedetails.php?grave=132397&scrwidth=1280.

Unfortunately, not all of the gravestone is visible in the image and not all of the visible text is legible. However, the gravestone appears to be in a good shape so one or more better photographs might yield better results.

Thank for any assistance!

I sent you a message via www.gravestonephotos.com but not sure if that got through. If not I will repeat the answer here.
I have other photos of this tomb but the inscription does not show very well because of the shade from a large Yew tree and because of algae in the incisions. If you want a selection of photos send me a personal message through RootsChat with an email address that I can send them to.
The inscription as far as I can tell reads:
"In this Tomb
Are Deposited the Remains of
Mr. BENJAMIN HUGGETT
Late of New York in
NORTH AMERICA, Merchant
Having by Dilegence and Industry acquired
Handsome ____dence
He returned to his Native Country to pass
The Remainder of his Days.
He was a pious Christian and
A Loyal Subject."

Then follow 5 lines of smaller text that I can't make out followed by:

"On the 8th Day of December 1792
Aged 72 Years."

Then follow another 4 indicipherable lines, possibly another person entry, followed by:

Also of Mr. JOHN HUGGETT
Who Died 1803
Aged 71 Years."

On a tablet of the south side of the tomb is the inscription:

"In Memory of GEORGE
Son of JOHN and SARAH HUGGETT
Died October 9th 1798
Aged 21 Years.
Also THOMAS their son
Died December 9th 1799
Aged 24 Years."

The age of 24 years is not clear but it is twenty something.

The inscription looks as though it will clean up to yield the full text so if you have a special interest in this I might be able able to arrange it. If so let me know.
