Patrick SLOAN and Sarah WALMSLEY married about 1841, Ballymartin
« on: Friday 24 June 05 10:40 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find ancestors/siblings of Patrick Sloan, born abt 1821 in County Down. He married Sarah Walmsley (daughter of George Walmsley and Christina McDowell) abt 1841 at Ballymartin.  They had 7 children, Mary Ann abt 1848, Margaret abt 1849, Hugh abt 1856, Patrick abt 1858, James abt 1861, Christina abt 1862 and Arthur abt 1863. Patrick (snr) was a Res Colour Sgt in the 9th Foot Regiment at Newry in 1849.  He died 18/8/1863 and is buried at Killyleagh, with his granddaughter Sarah Fitzsimons (nee Croskery). All of the children, with the exception of Margaret, emigrated to New Zealand as well as Sarah between 1874 and 1880.  Can you help me to find any more info on this family?
Sloan - Kilkeel, Newry, Killyleagh
Walmsley - Ballymartin
McDonald - Invernessshire
Grant - Invernessshire
Bell - County Kerry
Stevenson - Kinross, Tillicoultry, Lanarkshire, Falkirk,
Howley - County Clare
Milne - Dunbarton

Heres a start on the irish sources
Ballymartin townland appears to be in two civil parishes Tullynakill and Kilkeel in Co down. There is a considerable distance between them and I think Tullynakill can be left out o your searches

Ros Davies Co Down website has more accurate dates

As the family is catholic I worried about my inclusivity to Kilkeel civil parish as it differs frim the Catholic parish of Kilkeel.the catholic parish name is and found the following explanation on http://www.historyfromheadstones.com/index.php?displaygraveyardinfo&graveyard_name=Ballymartin Graveyard Name : Ballymartin RC Civil Parish : Kilkeel Town / Townland : Ballymartin OS Reference : J341165

Is In the townland of Ballymartin and civil parish of Kilkeel but in the Catholic parish of Lower Mourne, The old parish of Mourne was divided in 1768 and the parish priest of this half, the Rev James Killen, built a church at Ballymartin some time before 1790 when he died, The church was entirely rebuilt in 1825 The graveyard contains few ancient stones, the oldest dating from 1820 most are of rough granite and are difficult to read The graveyard lies entirely to the south of the church. Ros Davies adds in The graveyard is attached, gravestone inscriptions available UHF Vol 10, oldest stone 1820; email me for a gravestone look-up
The other church is
St. Mary's Catholic Church, Glassdrumman - Lower Mourne
on the western side of the Newcastle to Kilkeel road
This chapel was built in 1832 ....Newspaper article from Northern Herald;

Will you please clarify:
Was it Christina McDowell who was born in 1801? Where?
Whom did Christina marry on 5th August 1826? Was this in Kilkeel? When did she marry the other husband?
Do you have another thread on RootsChat about this family? You ask for "new info" so I assume that you have previously asked for information on them.
Edit. I now see that this is your first post on RootsChat. Welcome to RootsChat.  :)

Thanks hallmark. That's why I asked if there already was a thread, then noticed that kiwimintie is new.
Kiwimintie, I suggest that you add a post to the previous thread  which hallmark has highlighted, saying that you have started a new thread about Patrick Sloan and Sarah Elizabeth Walmsley, with a link to this one. Contributors to the original thread may get a notification that there has been a new reply. They will then become aware of this thread and may be able to contribute more information.
An alternative is to ask a moderator to merge the threads.
Have you put these families on Surname Interests?
Edit. I've asked mod's opinion on merging threads.
