Non-conformist birth registers
« on: Sunday 13 April 14 08:37 BST (UK) »
I've found lots of my family's births from the 1800s in the non-conformist registers and wondered if I can find out which denomination these actually were?

Trevor,
What subscription would be best? I have several families from Eastwood Essex and suspect there are some from 1885 onwards West Ham/Barking area.

Ancestry also has the same pre 1837 non-conformist registers, although the indexing doesn't always show which denomination they are.  I suspect if you find the start of the particular "piece" it would show on that page.

Post 1837 non-conformist registers are either in the Records Office or possibly still with the chapel/church.  The pre1837 registers are at the National Archives which is why they appear on thegenealogist and ancestry.

Thanks smudwhisk.
I've got ancestry, which is where I found the non conformist dates ... It just says 'Presbyterian, baptist or Methodist', but not the actual denomination and not the church.
I've also got SEAX and can't find lots of baptisms, which makes me think they were non conformist too? I know the dates and where they were born, but just can't find the baptisms. It's whole sets of families too.

The Ancestry transcript and/or the image should show the National Archives catalogue reference, in this case probably in the form RG4/XXXX.

To identify the chapel and clarify the denomination, copy/paste the RG reference into the National Archives online catalogue here ...

All I can get is 'Dr William's Library' where it was registered.
I'm looking at Selina Pratt born 1830 Thundersley to James Pratt and Rebecca Wisbey.
