Osborne marriage in Rutland
« on: Sunday 13 April 14 10:44 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful if somebody could find the following marriage.
John Osborne 1801-1874 of Redditch in Worcestershire married Ann (surname unknown) who was born in Uppingham about 1798. Their first child Caroline was born about 1828 in Redditch so the marriage would be about 1827. John and Ann may have married in Rutland so I would like to try that county first.

There are two John Osborne and Ann marriages in Rutland about that time:

22 Sept 1828 Ashwell
John Osborne of Wissendine and Ann Peniston

3 Jan 1826 Tinwell
John Osborne of Great Casterton and Ann Seaton of this parish by licence

It won't be the John Osborn and Ann Seaton marriage because they are having children baptised from March 1826 in Tinwell to 1838 in Ketton.  As they had two daughters baptised Mary Seaton Osborn in Ketton in 1834 and 1836 that tends to confirm it's that marriage.

I can't see any sign of John Osborne and Ann Peniston after the 1828 marriage in Rutland.  No children and no burials.  That said, John Osborne may only have been living in Wissendine for three weeks prior to the marriage.

The only obvious Ann Peniston baptism I can see in Rutland is 27 Jun 1802 to Francis and Sarah in Ashwell.  Ashwell isn't that far from Uppingham but it's possible they could have married anywhere in that area, including Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.

Was John and Ann's youngest child born before the start of registration because she's listed as 3 years old on the 1841 Census, suggesting she may have been born post July 1837?

Info from the Leicester & Rutland FHS Rutland Parish Register Transcript CDs.

I don't think Ann Peniston is going to be your Ann because it looks unlikely her family were of the same social status as John Osborne.  One of her sisters married an agricultural labourer and another a Miller.

Hello again,
In reply to your question about the last child: Margaret Ann was born about 1838 and the previous child Anne was born about 1837. All the children were born at Redditch according to the 1851 census. Maybe I shall have to do a Worcestershire look up for the marriage.

Might be better to bite the bullet and order Margaret Ann's birth certificate.  That way you will get Ann's maiden name.  There isn't much point looking in Worcestershire if you don't know what surname you are looking for.  Osborn isn't that uncommon a name and without a birth certificate to confirm her maiden name, you are never going to be able to confirm beyond any doubt whatever marriage you find. ;)

25 Jun 1824 St Sepulchre Northampton John OSBORN and Ann WARD by banns

9 Mar 1824 St Peter Wisbech Cambridgeshire John OSBORN and Mary Ann GRUBB witnesses Charles AYERS and Sarah LITTLE Ceremony performed by Robert Jarrold King, Curate

3 Jan 1826 All Saints Tinwell Rutland John OSBORN ( grooms parish) Cateston Magna ( that is what is written not sure if it should be Aston Magna, Gloucestershire or maybe Caslteton in Derbyshire) and Ann SEATON witnesses MELLARS and E OBSORN By Licence

I can find no John Osbourne/Osboun/Osborn in my own Osbourne research, however if he happened to meet his wife when visiting 'family' thought it may help as there are Osbourne's around that era in Market Overton: Cottesmore  and one Edward Osborn marrying in Cottesmore in 1827, was from Barrow Rutland ; Greetham; Exton and there are  many in Cleethorpes Lincolnshire

He or rather 'a' John Osborn didn't marry in Cottesmore Rutland so you can cross that one out, but I think the problem you have is that during that time frame with records few have connecting information( ie no fathers name on marriage record) and depends on the parish what information is written. To be sure you are best to get one of the childrens birth certificates at least then you  know her full name and it will make it easier to search and find where they were married

It's Casterton Magna according to L&RFHS CDs ie. Great Casterton in Rutland.  But they had children baptised in Tinwell, Great Casterton and Ketton and one of the children had Seaton as a middle name.
