Dixon Family of Cowpen Quay area of Blyth
« on: Thursday 24 April 14 16:44 BST (UK) »
Is anybody else doing any research into the Dixon family of Cowpen Quay/ Colliery area of Blyth.

My Great Great Grandmother was Mary Anne Dixon who married Matthew Ferguson, her Father was John Dixon.

I am being asked for help by another Great Great Grandchild who lives in Australia and the above information is all I have.

Somewhere in the back of my mind and on a previous computer hard drive I recall seeing a document entitled " A Hitch at Horton " which contained marriages missing from the Horton registers and I am pretty sure it showed a marriage for Mary Anne Dixon and Matthew Ferguson.

Any information or help would be appreciated.

Malcolm.

Hi

Is this the 1853 marriage shown on freebmd?   www.freebmd.org.uk/

You can find them on the 1871 census here

And you can search the 1881 here

I am sure I still have the article 'A Hitch at Horton' on my computer - it just isn't showing itself right now.

If I find it I'll be back later

Found the article but there is no mention of a Dixon on the list.

What timescale are we looking at?

There is a baptism for a Mary Ann Dixon in Horton - father John, mother Sarah on 6/12/1831 living at Cowpen Colliery

The marriage is on freebmd as per my reply above and the family are on the 1871 census as per the link which confirms Mary Ann's birthplace as Cowpen 1830

Sounds positive on that baptism then.  This one could get tricky as there are soooo many Dixons living in Cowpen at this time.

Quote
her Father was John Dixon.

In view of Christine's comment re: the number of Dixon's - did her fathers name come from the 1853 marriage cert?  What was his occupation on that cert?

Were either of the witnesses surname Dixon?

The only 1841 entry I can find with a father John was in Hexham and she was b 1833

There is a Rootshcat user Michael Dixon who quite often responds to posts about Blyth. May be worthwhile trying to contact him by PM to see if your share your Dixon lines.
