I seem to recall that Michael's Dixon line hails from Cumberland but he is a Cowpen lad so may have some recollections

Hi Carole and Christine,

Thanks for your help in this matter, That is her! the one that was born in 1830 in Waterloo Cowpen Colliery.

I think that I must have got her fathers name from the marriage entry in the " Hitch at Horton " records.

I have not had a lot of time to spend on this matter this week as I had an accident on Wednesday evening and my car was written off and so I am spending a lot of time trying to find a replacement vehicle.

Thanks again for you help
Malcolm.

Am responding to a wee mention of me !
I am James Michael Dixon, born Bebside, 1941, son of James Dixon
My father was born Haltwhistle, of parents from Brampton, Cumberland.

I usually turn a blind eye to Dixon queries for Blyth as I have no good info
on them. But I do pay attention to Cowpen queries.

Cowpen was one of the five "townships"that comprised the ancient parish of Horton.
The communities within Cowpen township were Cowpen Village, Cowpen Quay,
Waterloo, Crofton and Bebside Colliery.

All those places were not part of Blyth until Blyth and Cowpen councils amalgamated under the name of Blyth c1906.

The 'Hitch at Horton' records only cover the missing volume 4 - 1809 to 1812 so wouldn't have a marriage for Mary Ann.  Also no father's detail was included at this time.  You must have something else in your records to indicate a father named John.

Hope the car hunt is going well - pleased no-one was hurt.

Hi,

I have just found this post about Mary Ann Dixon.  She was my great great grandmother.  Her daughter Elizabeth Ferguson married John Gray and they came to Australia some time in the early 1880s.

I know very little about the Ferguson family and would like to find out more.

If anyone can assist, I would be very grateful.

Robyn

RobynMC,

Welcome to Rootschat.  It might be better to start a new thread with your inquiry since the name being sorted will be Ferguson.  When you do post give as much information that you have-census you have found, any certificates, age, where born etc.
