Help with war record please
« on: Sunday 27 April 14 23:16 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I have just received my grandfathers war records and would like a little help deciphering them. The MOD sent a list of abbreviations but these are not on them

x (ii) list & x(iv) list
No 1 I.B.D.
No 1 C.R.U. /5 corps
granted S.P.P.
I.R.T.D. (or I.R.I.D)

I know he was wounded but there is no mention of what the wound was, it just states that he was transfered to a casualty clearing station then onto a general hospital. Is there anywhere I can find this information?

Thanks in advance for any help

x (ii) list = they were wounded, and evacuated. They received treatment that required them to leave their unit, so they are no longer on the strength of that unit.

x(iv) list = they have recovered, and sent back to the Corps, though not yet assigned to a unit

No 1 I.B.D. = No 1 Infantry Infantry Base Depot
No 1 C.R.U. /5 corps = ?
granted S.P.P. = Special Proficiency Pay
I.R.T.D. (or I.R.I.D) = ?

Could you post a scan of that section so we could have a look.

Thanks Spikey, have discovered that CRU is the Civil Resettlement Unit. I'm not at home at the moment but will scan & post the section later.

Do you have a date for his transfer to the CRU? The reason I ask is because Civil Resettlement Units were not formed until early 1945, under the Civil Resettlement Scheme. They dealt with demobilised soldiers and ex-POWs, helping them transition back into civvie life.

Given the dates and the location, I am inclined to think that CRU stands for Corps Reinforcement Unit. I can't find any records on TNA but a number of books mention such units (google books).
