East Morden Church - old one
« on: Thursday 01 May 14 11:58 BST (UK) »
Having traced my Dorset ancestors back as far as my 5 x great grandfather bapt in Morden in 1722, I decided to have a look at the village and church a few months ago when I was staying not far away. However, it was to be a disappointment, the church was a "modern" rebuild. When I say modern I mean 1870's, so nothing like the church my ancestors would have known 150 years earlier. Has anyone come across any pictures of the old church. I expect if any exist, they would be from paintings or engravings as it might be too early for photography.

Have just been browsing through the Morden church register (on line at Ancestry) and discovered on the last page a list of the donors (with sums donated) towards a singing gallery in Morden Church. The register covers 1719 to 1769, but it doesn't say when the singing gallery was installed. One of my ancestors donated 5 shillings. I have two people with the same name (father and son) who could have donated in that period.

Hi,

Have you contacted the Dorset History Centre in Dorchester to see if they hold any pictures of the old church?
