Campbell - Isle of Lewis
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 16:10 BST (UK) »
I am searching for information about my Campbell family. My great Grandfather is John Campbell, born on Mar 17, 1874 at Barvas, Isle of Lewis. His siblings are Barbara (b. 1868), Donald (b. 1872), Alexander (b. 1877), Norman (b. 1879), Murdoch (b. Sept 7, 1881) Allan (b. July 12, 1884) Roderick (b. Mar 3, 1888)

John married Matilda Devlin from Kirkoswald Aug 16, 1899 in Glasgow. They had 2 sons in Scotland named William (b. Feb 2, 1900) & John (Mar 27, 1902) a third son Norman born in San Francisco in 1907 & settled in Canada in 1910.

John's parents are William & Mary Macleod. They were married Nov 29, 1866 but I don't know their year of birth.

Hi Norma Jean,
Obviously both Campbell and McLeod are very common names, so it might take a bit of work to find John's parents.
Have you found the family on any of the Censuses? That should give you an indication of their ages and place of birth. Also have you any idea when William Campbell and Mary Campbell ms.McLeod died? Finding their death certificates should give you their parents names. As would the marriage certificate. You say they married 29th Nov 1866. The marriage cert will have ages, occupations and parents names.
Looby :)

William Campbell1841-1891 and Mary Macleod 1846- raised their family of i daughter and 7 sons at croft no. 5 Arnol, Parish of Barvas, Isle of Lewis. Their family was Barbara 1869-1887 not married,
Donald 1872-. John 1874- ,Alexander 1877-, Norman 1879- ,Murdo 1881-,Allan 1885- Roderick 1888-

Donald stayed at home and was married with family at 5 Arnol----- there are still some Campbells at 5 Arnol. Allan died in the 1st World War. All the other sons--- five in number---- emigrated to either USA or Canada.  My notes say------ Murdo settled in Alberta and Roderick settled in Kamloops, BC.
In the 1901 Census , widow Mary Campbell (nee Macleod)was at home with sons Donald, Allan and Roderick.
