As you have his exact date of birth, his parents names and an address of longstanding, it might be worthwhile contacting the register office for Pontypridd and ask if they can do a search. His birth entry may be missing from the GRO index but available locally.

welcome to rootschat

Thank you Doran54 - I'm completely overwhelmed with the speed with which the responses have come!! I've previously hunted the GenUKi info down but the other link was new to me, thankyou. I'm going to have a good look around on it. And also the third one you posted. Will come back and let you know how I went.

Thanks again

Formal adoptions only began in 1927, so if he was adopted, it would be an informal arrangement.

Rats, that was my fear. Thanks for confirming that. I'll keep working on it.

It does seem curious that, after a long marriage, George and Elizabeth should suddenly start having children around her 40th birthday. Has a birth or baptism been found for Elizabeth Ann?

Yes, I thought so, too, though the parents appear to have spent quite a bit of the marriage apart while he did the coalmining thing and she lived with her family.  I have an original ‘Certificate of Registry of Birth’ for the sister in my grandfather’s old documents and was told that can sometimes be something they give adopted children. However, I chased her original down via the GRO and was able to get a copy of a proper birth certificate that shows she was born to Elizabeth and George in October 1901 (address listed as High Street Abertridwr). It's legit as far as I can tell.

Just possibly, maybe?!

Births, June qtr 1903
Pontypridd district    vol 11a, page 641

Beynon, William

Sometimes a middle name was only added at baptism! ::)

Abertridwr is within Eglwysilan parish.
And that parish is within the Pontypridd Registration District.

Elizabeth Ann isn't with them on the 1901 census but there is this...

Sorry, that was my mistake. Elizabeth Ann was born in October so, yes, after the 1901 census date. Have updated my records. Was clearly hallucinatory by the time I got to the sister :)  But yes, that was her birth record you cited.

Oops I looked at the wrong family in 1901,  sorry.

I still wonder why there is no place of birth in 1911 when George and Elizabeth filled theirs in.

The only other thing is if William was their son his birth registration has been missed off the BMD records.

Please don't be sorry. You guys are like the genealogical mafia--getting the job done!! But yes, that's a really good point re: birth place not being listed. I had assumed slack census taker but maybe it is more telling (for him anyway)...

Thank you, Dawn, following that up now.  (And yes, I think my great grandmother is 'Lizzie' in the 1901 census, have used that in all my searching, too, just in case.
