Whitehaven Holy Trinity marriages
« on: Friday 23 May 14 00:49 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Does anyone have access to the above parish registers for the year 1803? I am looking for the marriage of Henry Hanson and Catherine Blanch(e), which, according to their marriage licence dated 31/10/1803, was to take place at Holy Trinity Church, Whitehaven. According to my source the marriage was solemnized the next day. Can someone have a look at the register to confirm this, and tell me who the witnesses to the marriage were - I am hoping they can help expand this family!

Cheers,

Toban

My source is a distant cousin, who has a copy of the marriage licence. He told me they were married the following day. That is all I have regarding the marriage.

Would be best to find out where your cousin got this information, and a copy if possible.Without some reference, searching is pointless.

For some reason, the IGI batch has lots of marriages for 1802 and 1804, but none for 1803. :(
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Hi,

Came across an old message board post from 1999 which gives some details - witnesses :-

Henry Hanson of this parish and Catherine Blanche spinster of this parish were married in this Chapel by licence on the First day of November 1803.
This marriage was solemnised by us Henry Hanson Catharine Blanche
in the presence of Robert Davis - Maria Scargill (possibly Scargull)
The name of the minister is hard to make out - it looked like CL Church.

Thanks Sandra! That's exactly what I was looking for. Now to find out whether there's any family connection between the witnesses...

Maria Scargill was formerly Hanson - she married James Scargill at London St Bartholomew the Great in May 1792. She was widowed when James died in 1799. Maria subsequently married James Mudie at Southwark St George in Dec 1812.
Scargill (all spelling variants): C12th to present day - worldwide
Rothwell/King-Irwin/Blake/Fry/Barnardo: C19th-C20th - Ireland

[img]There was a Hanson Family website but no longer as i changed Internet providers and no longer have a provider for the webpages.  I posted the marriage license I found, attached.

Henry Hanson's parents are a mystery.  I have concluded his sister, Maria, was a witness at his wedding.  Maria married James Scargill and later James Greig Mudie.  Acknowledgement goes to Toban.

No information, yet, on whom are Henry's and Maria's parents.

Henry married Catherine Blanche on 1 November 1803.  Catherine's parents are James Blanche and Nancy Ann Browne.  James Blanch/Blanche's parents are also a mystery.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!
