Thomas Welham and Marrgaret Geoghegan
« on: Friday 23 May 14 11:21 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Thomas Welham was born in West Ham, London in June 1859. He was living there in 1861 and 1871 census. In 1881 census, he was a Private, with 86 other soldiers on Portsea Island, Portsmouth. He must have gone to Ireland shortly afterwards, because in third quarter 1882, he married Margaret Geoghegan, in Mullingar, Co Westmeath. They might have stayed there after their wedding, because their oldest son, Thomas Wellan, as on the records, was born during second quarter of 1883 in Mullingar. The family then moved to West Derby, Liverpool, as the remaining 6 children were born there.
I know that a lot of Irish records no longer exist, but does anybody know anything about the Geoghegan family from Mullingar? Do you know if the family came to England prior to 1882? Why was Thomas in Ireland?
         Any information would be appreciated.
         Thank you

A search of the "RootsIreland" website search index brings back an 1882 Westmeath marriage for Thomas Willhelm to Margaret Geoghegan, her father is Edward Geoghegan. Record content is pay to view.

Again from the RootsIreland search index, his father was George Willhelm / Welham, the couple got married in the RC parish of Killucan.

For a bit of background as opposed to any specific linkage to your Margaret, the surname Geoghegan has a huge historical significance in Westmeath (can't testify to the accuracy of the following, but other internet references cover the same territory):
