RAF records
« on: Monday 26 May 14 22:58 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone could tell me if there are RAF records on Ancestry or Find my Past? I have subscriptions for both of these but not sure how to locate RAF information  ::)
Many thanks,

Hi

The link below has information about RAF Service Records

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/raf-rfc-rnas.htm

If it is after 1922 then the records are still held by the MOD. The link below has information about applying for copies

When researching a large number of names on a WW2 war memorial I found the records department at the Royal Air Gorce Museum, Hendon very helpful.

They can be contacted by writing to them at Royal Air Force Museum London,
Grahame Park Way, London, NW9 5LL or by telephone at 020 8205 2266. asking for the department by name.

They are happy to answer queries.

Regards,

Keith

Have a go with my search engine .

http://www.rafaircraftaccidents.com/search/search.html

It uses and links to resources at The Gazette, The National Archives, National Library of Scotland and private databases.

Use with what you know then refine from the best matches on the found, repeat until you have the surname, full names and service number.

Finally try different combinations between Surname, Initials, Full names and service number to find all the index orphans from the various archive sources.

Beta release at the moment as I have a few tweaks to add.

Seems a bit of a minefield at times searching for records, especially when you can find a link on one site and not on others. Managed to find a record set on NArchives of an ancestor who I knew was in RAF in 1918 and had survived the war, but documents had not been digitised and a quote to have copies of the documents came to over 88 pounds (lots of pages).

Purely on a whim I typed his name plus raf into Google and this link came up with lots of info. on my chap.  So give it a go - just type the full name plus raf and see if you are lucky too.

Another source to try is www:flightglobal.com/pdfarchive
Just type a name in search box at top. I was lucky and found newspaper entry of my ancestors impending marriage.
