Has anybody heard of "Thankerton House"?! COMPLETED -- thank you!

Hi there- are you still exploring the history of Thankerton House?
My friend lived in the house in the 1980s and 90s. It was a beautiful and very sizeable 'Manor House'.

Second, yes I certainly am still interested in Thankerton House; and was interested to learn that it was still in existence as late as you say.  Good to have confirmation that it was a substantial manor house.  If you know anything more about it, I should be pleased to learn it!

Thankerton House in Holytown dated back to the 1770's  - however extensions were added. Don't know who the original owners were but it became part of the Woodall / Whitehall Estates (linked to the Tory MP Willie Whitelaw) - the house was given to one of daughters of the family at some point I believe. It unfortunately no longer exists  burned down in the late 1980s or early 1990's. There is a modern housing estate there now. The pillars to the entrance of the drive to the old house still stand at the end of Thankerton Ave in Holytown

thanks for the old map. You can see the old coach road that went almost due north from Thankerton house - it crosses what is now the M8 motorway between Glasgow and Edinburgh. The road went to Calderbank and directly to Woodall house which was also part of the estates. At some point during the mid 1880's it was divided between the Whitehall family and one of the daughters got the Woodall house and the other Thankerton House (I think anyway). Who actually built the original house I don't know - it could have been as early as the late 1600's/early 1700s. The house had a number of windows that were bricked up and painted - this was a response to the window tax that was introduced in 1748 - so the house almost certainly predated that time.

Thanks for this link - interesting in that it sounds as if the name Thankerton House was adopted in the 1800s and the previous name or the name of the local area seems to be Craigbank. The house stood on a the edge of a bank which led down to the burn - so the name is logical as a craig (or linked sounding words  e.g. croc, cnoc was a hill leading down to a burn (in the old Gaelic).
